I saw this on twitter just now - @rioferdy5 considering offer to move to China when current #mufc contract ends in summer 2013

would he go there? unless they are offering him a lot of money.

Well its a nice retirement home where he rakes in cash. Whats not to like. He is already only the third best defender at united so he doesn't have much time left.

I suppose it would depend on individuals and situations

Rio has served his time and is not going to go on much longer, so I wouldnt begrudge him a final big pay day

Then you have the likes of Gyan, who although i can understand if he wanted to get big money if he was out of contract, did wrong to Sunderland and should be strung up

As a footballer in your prime you get sufficient money to live a lifestyle most would dream of. So the thrill for me would be pitting my wits against the best in the world
so I personally wouldnt begrudge a Ronaldo going to Real or Cesc going to Barca etc

At the twilight if a bigg offer comes along then why not

His replacement has been here for a while. Smalling.

Unless smalling suddenly gets terrible I doubt it tbh

If you look at fergies MO, he spends big on players like rio, keane etc but they are not the finished article. He then polishes them into the players they become

I see the same happening with smalling and jones etc

I get grief for this, but if Jones becomes a keano type it wouldnt suprise me at all

Or if he has a career threatening injury i doubt we'll buy one. On Phil Jones he's been superb for us this season has been one of the buys of the season

Does he really need one last big pay day? If he was on 50 grand a week with a 50% tax, he is still taking home 25 grand a week. He isn't going to be skint.

He may just want to try something different before calling it a day. I imagine there will be a few clubs around the world willing to throw money at him, so they can increase their own value/prestige/profile.

But would Spurs take/want him? If he does leave Utd, I dont see him playing in England. MLS most likely destination

think about it, Harry Redknapp would be over the moon to have him, he wanted him before he signed William Gallas.

Ah, but will Redknapp be at Spurs at the end of next season, and more importantly will Rio be fit enough to play at the top level that is the premiership?

Doubt he'd go to the MLS. The only two teams most well known European players would be willing to play for are LA Galaxy and NY Redbulls. Both teams are currently using all three designated player slots so he'd have to play elsewhere, and the only other city with an MLS team that has a lifestyle appeal would Chicago.

Honestly I see Rio staying at United til he retires and a believe we've already offered him an extension to his deal, if not a new deal entirely. If his choice ends up between megabucks in china or United I wonder how big of an impact his family would have in his decision? David Beckham didn't move to PSG because his family wanted to stay in LA.

If he leaves in 2013 Evans will be 25 so not sure we'll need anyone else. More likely SAF will look for Keane or one of the reserves to step up.

i think he's taken home around 1.5 million per year on average for the last ten years. But he's probably spent around 80% of that. Guess he'll have a few million in the bank, but that's not a huge amount for a former footballer to live on for the next fifty years or so. Can definitely understand why he'd want one last move - he could earn twenty or thirty million for a couple of years work and never have to worry about money again.
