Attempt #2 I think it's reasonably cut and dry who's going to win this year, but that's no reason not to have a vote and discussion about it. Apologies if I've missed anyone's first pick. I did it in order of appearances, skipping those who I felt didn't stand a realistic chance (Martin Taylor and Lee Hodson are particularly unfortunate omissions, but I felt votes would be taken by others in their position, and I couldn't pick two of Murray, Kightly and Alex).
i think it has to be Mapps, though there are a few who deserve second place! Deeney has worked incredibly hard, and Eustace has again shone as a Captain and trojan for the club. Nyron has been great, though to be honest, seemed better on loan lol...but he still has saved our season a few times, and for the vote of the soft hearted, Doyley, because it's his testimonial year. But Mapps has been outstanding, and he stayed when he was under a lot of pressure to move, which makes him even more outstanding imho
I reckon it's between Mapps, Deeney and Hogg. I've gone with Hogg, as I think he has only just come into the team this year but has been an ever present player in the team. He has on many occasions had young or attacking minded players around him, leaving it almost entirely up to him to screen the defence, running up and down the pitch all game. If not for him I definitely think that our midfield would have been overrun on many an occasion. Tackling wise, he has been fantastic. I have seen him put in many great challenges, I don't think they could be any better.....but it's a sad showing of these times that refs are blowing up and on occasion even yellow carding him. Ok he has made a couple of professional fouls on breaks but that aside I think he has mostly been intelligent with his tackling (and fouling!). Although the Eustace partnership has been shaky at times, I definitely think that it works better than the Buaben partnership. Not really been impressed with Buaben this season, he still has time to prove himself and adjust, but it's not been great. When he has had a chance to play, he's usually been extremely quiet and ineffective/lacklustre. I think if there is something for Hogg to improve on next season, it would have to be his attacking game. It's obviously not his primary concern, but if he's playing with Eustace next season we need some more forward movement and creativity. Eustace's stationary curved air passes aren't really enough against decent opposition. I think that Deeney has been fantastic since Sordell left, adding goals to his work rate and physical presence. If he carries this form into next season then he could just be a 20 goal+ striker. Hopefully Iwelumo can prove useful, and maybe Garner, Assombalonga and whoever else we may have next season can find their feet in the Championship. Mariappa has definitely been a rock, I would probably say this has been his best season performance wise. In past seasons, he has always been good, but there was a lot more memories of mistakes and just generally being bettered by strikers. Personally, I think that the rest of the defence have been quite error prone this season....Dickinson has struggled in many games, and Nosworthy has chipped in with his silly errors too. With that in mind, it has been a tough job for Mariappa, he is still fairly young despite his experience, but when Taylor is not playing he is the main man in our defence, personally I'd give him the captaincy next season. So..I think to sum it up...I'll change my vote to Mariappa, and have Hogg as 2nd place/best newcomer
I think Mapps deserves it on merit but Hogg is a worthy runner up, TD has run his legs off and not always got the credit he deserves for his performances over the full season, if only he could find the net a bit more then he would be in the running IMHO. My vote goes to Mapps
My thought process mimics MadMoose almost in its entirety but I will stick with Hogg. I certainly wont begrudge Mariappa his surely inevitable victory!
My vote has also gone to Mapps and if we had a vote, my young player would be Sean Murray but I'm not sure what age that category goes up to.
i think Hogg is a good choice too, though i do think he's faded a little lately. He still works tremendously hard though, and fights for everything he can...
Can't say I've particularly noticed a drop Hornette, because of how hard he works. If Hogg were younger he would probably have played his last game of the season by now though, as a precaution against burnout if nothing else.
This is very difficult this season. It depends on how you judge it and what you judge them on. I will be slated for what i am about to say, but its only what i believe to be the truth. I think this will depend on a lot of things. If we judge all the players by the jobs they are meant to do then you could say no-one deserves it. GK- Loach made several cock-ups which rule him out, TK has only been around a few weeks. DF- LH and MT not included. NN was great on loan but has made several errors since. Mapps has been the best of them but has also made a few cock ups (backpass!) Doyley and Dicko have been in and out of the squad. MF- Kightly, Kacaniklic were great but for short period. Eustace has done ok but we did better with Mapps as Capt. Hogg has flown under the radar. Murray great for such a short period (1/3 of a season). Yeates and Forsyth have been poor. ST- Sordell was greedy and certainly not prolific. Deeney hardly scores. CI and Garner score even less. However if you take into account effort and what them being in the team does you see 3/4 clear candidates. Hoggy- Him being there has allowed Eustace to score his goals and he has done the job of making crucial tackles and breaking up play. Mapps- He has been the best of a slightly dodgy defence, has a goal too. Deeney- epic work rate and has repaid Dyche's faith in him with a few goals too. Murray- in his short spell he has scored 5 and set up many more. Its not a clear cut choice this season and i will have to wait a while before i do that.
I think Mapps will win it , but Have voted for Deeney , His willingness to play even out of position , His excellent workrate even his patience waiting to get his chance in his preferred position(prima donna types would have handed in transfer requests by now ,I think last weeks goal against ipswich typified all these qualities , a really good club man .
For me it has to be AM for both his continued improvement and his consistency...but a special mention in dispatches to TD, JH & JE...
Who would you pick for Goal of the season. http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/sport/watfordfc/watfordfcawardsform/ Mariappa for the main award and I've got for Dickinson v Bristol City as the GOTS with Kightly v Leeds 2nd and Deeney winner last wek being 3rd. EDIT: JUst forgotten about Forsyth's crackers as well...he's got 2 quality strikers on that list.
Ooo, tough one. Depends what you like really. If it's great runs your after then it's either Sordell or Kightly. The best out-and-out finishes were Forsyth's first, Murray's and Deeney's. And Eustace's were just plain beautiful. I'm voting for Deeney's goal first, Eustace's second second and Murray's third. The third choice was partly because it was a good strike, partly because it was Murray, and because it was West Ham.
Mapps has my vote. Does any one know of any links where I could watch highlights from abroad? I used to go to a few home and away games when in the UK. Now the BBC don't even allow the highlights to be broadcasted abroad so no clue about goal of the season. Thanks, in advance.
Cannot be too many Orns in Mexico! Sadly I don't think the goals can be seen now. Maybe the club will put the selection up later on for people to pick from. Mixture of goals as stated above. Dickinson's was a great left footed effort from 30 yards whilst Kightly's was a mazy dribble and finish. Deeney produced a great chip from quite a tight angle.
Mex you have 2 choices mate , sign up to watford world (which is still a bit tempramental ) or use a proxy server which gets the bbc highlights back for some live games I use http://www.firstrowsports.eu/
What does it say about our goals this season that 3 of the contenders for GOTS are from the same game and 2 of those were against 10 men?
I've gone for Hoggy with Mapps and Deenster 2 and 3. Mini Bloother has gone with Murray Mapps and Hoggy. I think that the fact that a decent case can be made for a few players shows that we have had a decent season.
