Apologies for starting the query about the Hanging Gate although I have enjoyed all the georaphical nostalgia Being over here and not able to post every day ( we have a large villa a large garden and 19 rescued/abandoned dogs so "leisure" time is at a premium ) so hopefully you regualrs will allow me a bit of nostalgia and refresh my memorie of places etc

Potts reference to Hanford r/bt started it as Hanford Boys Club who I captained used to play there at the side of the M6 link road and I can remember the Black Lion and Swan at Trent Vale nearby and also the Kozy "bug hut" cinema and watching Shane ( Alan Ladd ) there with my Dad approx 55 years ago

Turning to Stoke I agree with the praise for Smithy When I used to train with him one on one under the old Boothen End he was so competitive as hard as nails and Stoke through and through and just thinking about the "beautiful" players that we had back then in our golden era ------

Sir Stan of course Huddy Jimmy G Mudie McIlroy Dobing Violet and Big John etc etc all of whom Pulis would not have appreciated plus the characters like Calvin Palmer and Eddie Clamp ( who would probably have nutted Pulis ) I know I have missed out many others and does anyone remember Tim Coleman scoring 7 in a home game against?

Apologies again for the nostalgia Must be feeling homesick

    SiS

Ps Potts Still intend to PM you re our similar backgrounds but as you see above do not get a lot of time for the PC etc

PPS Nick sorry to see about your problem I guess it is age with all of us When I think of how fit I used to be Both Mrs SiS bless her and myself struggle with various ailments now

But above all KTF and UTP

Was it 7 against Lincoln? It was just before I started watching Stoke but I seem to remember reading or hearing about that game.

Nice memories and like P P I'm too young to remember anyone scoring SEVEN goals. Jackie Mudie went on to become a teacher at Burslem College SIS taught me when I was an apprentice. Many happy days we're metioned by him.. nothing wrong with looking back at old times SIS <ok>

I worked with a guy called Attwood, lived in Trent Vale he played for Hanford boys years ago... not sure when but he's 70 at least <whistle>

Enjoy the sun S I S Wish we we're there.

Thanks for your good wished SIS.

Here's a half back line (old terminology):

    Flowers - Setters - Clamp <yikes>

Re pubs - my Uncle Joe ran The Bull in Irongate, my Gran had a Habidashery around the corner, Joe then ran The Chequers in Loggerheads, all this well over 50 years ago

Never saw him play but I heard he was one of the best EVER Stoke player's.. he sadly suffered from Alzhiemers spelling sorry and he was a smashing bloke too!

The Pub is still there by the canal side.

It was my late father who saw Franklyn play, i think? alongiside Frankie Soo.. And I'm sure my dad said the same thing about Neil F playing for England.
I will use that wiki site and check it out. And also said he was the BEST C/Half ever to play for S.C.F.C. He must have been some player Cris.

    [edit] Early career

Franklin had made a impression at schoolboy level, playing at both inside and centre forward. In his quest to gain selection for the England Schoolboys side he was overlooked in favour of Len Shackleton.

Franklin turned professional in January 1939, and his career was just about to take off only to be put on hold by the suspension of League football because of the Second World War.

During the war he made 186 appearances for Stoke City in friendly and regional fixtures as well as representing England in wartime internationals.[1]

    [edit] Move abroad

When peacetime football resumed he was generally regarded as the country's best centre-half, and went on to make 142 League and 20 FA Cup appearances for Stoke, as well as winning 27 full England caps. By 1950, however, he was ready to leave Stoke - he was unhappy with the £20 a week maximum wage limit imposed by the FA, and felt the local air was not conducive to healthy living, as the local pottery kilns continually belched out their smoke and fumes. He wanted to move his family away to a cleaner climate, but what no-one envisaged was that would mean not just another club, but another continent.

In the summer of 1950 Franklin broke his contract with Stoke City and left the country for Colombia, to play for Independiente Santa Fe of Bogotá. He was on a £5,000 per year contract, with £35 win bonuses - a small fortune in the 1950s. However, Colombia was outside FIFA jurisdiction and their FA was considered a rebel authority. The situation was further aggravated when Franklin, who had just won his 27th consecutive England cap, declined to join the squad for the 1950 World Cup finals in neighbouring Brazil. Political and social unrest in Colombia made it hard for Franklin and his family to settle, and they returned to England after just two months.

    [edit] Return home

A suspension from league football followed and he never played for Stoke or England again. In February 1951, he moved to Second Division club Hull City for £22,500, at the time a world record fee for a defender.[2]

After leaving Hull, he had brief spells with Crewe Alexandra, Stockport County and Macclesfield Town and also tried management at Colchester United.

He also was the landlord of the Thwaites Arms on Thwaites Road in Oswaldtwistle; during this period he served on the FA pool's panel with Stan Mortensen late of Blackpool FC. He later ran a pub called the Dog and Doublet in Sandon, Staffordshire and died in 1996 aged 74.

    [edit] Legacy

Billy Wright, when selecting his Dream Team for the 50th Anniversary of the Footballer Of The Year award, had no hesitation in selecting Neil Franklin:
Neil was a superb stylist with an instinctive positional sense. His international career ended when he was suspended for becoming a mercenary in the outlawed Bogotá league. If Neil had been satisfied with the maximum £20 he was earning at Stoke City, he would have played for England for at least another four years, and I often wonder what difference that would have made to my career.
    Stanley Matthews also rated Franklin:
Neil won everything in the air, tackled with superb timing and when the ball was at his feet possessed the nous to pass it with all the guile and intelligence of the most cerebral of inside-forwards. An erect physique belied tremendous mobility and breathtaking speed over four or five yards.
Tom Finney also selected Neil Franklin for his Dream Team:
(Neil Franklin was) the best centre-half I ever played with or against. Just before the 1950 World Cup, he went off to play in Colombia, thinking he was going to make a bit of money, but it didn't work out. When he came back, the FA were furious and clubs wouldn't touch him. He was still good enough to play for England, though. It was very sad.

Potts Surprised it is still open after 46 years There was another pub at the top of the village that we used to use on the back road to Barlaston House and Blurton ( cant remember the name and another the other side of Longton that did a superb pint of Marstons

Turning to Saturday if " this football club" has any intention of progressing rather than surviving then we should go to Wigan to win Yes they are battling for survival and have had one or two good results recently but they play open not negatively and if we give it a real go we could win it but no doubt Pulis will park the bus on " Wigan Pier"

  12. Hi, And the news is that Fuller is going to be in the squad on Saturday!!! That is according to Kemp. I saw this on Eatsleeepfootball I think?

Personally, not happy with that if that happens!

It sure is still going strong.. a still a decent pint. Although, I don't know of any other pubs in Barlaston itself SIS.

As for the Wigan game, we've as usual nothing to lose everything to gain and we owe Wigan after that awful performance last game of the season. As you say SIS let's go for it!

    Cris
I read in the Sentinel this week " Fuller is ready to reclaim his place in the stoke team?? NOT if I had anything to do with it he wouldn't... So I guess what you read/heard is obviously not just paper's talking. I would play Crouch/Jerome up front with BOTH wingers and have a right good go at Wigan but of course T.P. will not will he! The lads should be confident after the last few results and if it ain't broken T.P. don't mess with it too much..

Up and at em <ok> Here's to 3pts and almost certainly safety for another season.

I'm not too fussed Fuller might be back in the team (well, the bench) after all, I remember Huth punching Matty Upson in the face for no apparent reason, and that seems to be forgotten about.
Even if we don't go all out, Wigan had a good result last week, so we need try and rattle 'em in the first 10 minutes. I think Crouch/ Jerome up front too, but I bet we'll only have one winger and either Johnny or Jerome out wide.

Yes Pistol you are right - but Stoke immediately suspended Huth (obviously knowing what would come from the FA), and to my knowledge has not re-iterated the offence.
Fuller will finish the season with more cards than goals, as he did last year. He is well past his best and the only impact he appears to generate now is reducing us to 10 men.
I think that in the summer one way of freeing up some funds is to clear out all the deadwood (Rory, Salif, Mama,Ric, Higgy, Soares, Tonge) and let Jerome,Cuevalier, Arisamendi & a hopefully fully fit Palacios get some game or bench time.
Deapite all my protestations about the welsh wizard's stupidity, I renewed the three season tickets, hoping that "The Times they are a changing". We'll soon see!

I too renewed my S/Ticket well done Swervy.. because we both love This football Club...
That is only one thing that T.P. does that really gets my goat up.
As for the Huth elbow v West Ham at the Brit? I think it was I've not seen him repeat it and Upson when he signed for Stoke said..
"It's one of those things that happen now and again we've made up" <ok>

Let's start a list of the one thing T.P. does that really hacks you off the most , next week I'll start a thread where we can all point out what we think are his good points! <yikes>

    1. WE are STOKE CITY F.C. NOT " This football Club"

Over to you guys this might get interesting

  17. Well done to Swervy renewing. I renewed today as well.

As I said previously TP will be long gone before I finish watching my team. I just hope he does get riad of those players mentioned above and does not tell us yet again what a wonderful servant RF has been. I agree that he has scored great goals but he really is no longer half the player he used to be. I just hope he does not get sent off yet again before the end of the season. Will those players find another club is the question for me?

Anyway let's hope that the best team is out but my thoughts are that it will be something like this:

    Begovic

    Wilko
    Shawcross
    Huth
    Wilson

    Shotton
    Whitehead
    Palacios
    Ethrington

    Walters
    Crouch

    Subs

    Sorenson
    Pennant
    Whelan
    Jerome
    Woodgate

It wasn't an elbow Potts, he punched him, and I've not seen him punch anyone since, I've noticed he's pretty good at sending an elbow in when the ref ain't looking, but he's one of our best players. Had we been talking about Fuller doing something like this I'm the Championship days, I don't think people would have made such a big deal, because he was our best player and everyone wanted him in the team. I agree in terms of ability, he should be dropped down the pecking order, and it should have been delt with better, Pulis sounded like he didn't really care, if he'd have said something like he was gonna have strong words, and punish him in house etc, and of there had been more of an apology from Ric, them the whole ordeal might not have sounded so bad.

And for your list, I'll have to have a think, I've got plenty of little niggles, but there's no one thing that really pissses me off.

Yep fair enough matie... re the punch by Huth.. as for Fuller I've said above. If anything PULIS is as much to blame for this. Because he punished Griffin after that W.Ham game and I think Cris is right. He, Andy Griffin played little or no part in our games after that.

As for Huth I have to agree here. I notice he does it quite often and HOW Huth get's away with it, only the ref's know.. AGAIN, Pulis should be having a word with Mr Huth about this.. otherwise he will eventually get found out. I still think that sliding tackle v Sunderland was stupid given the conditions.

  20. Yes agree and nothing less than I have said before about Huth. IMHO he is a thug. However, I think he is intelligent and that is possibly why he gets away with so much. Astounds me he is not sent packing more often than he has been.
