QPR forward Heidar Helguson has been given the all-clear to return to full training.

The Icelander, Rangers’ top scorer this season with nine goals, has been sidelined since being taken off during the FA Cup defeat against Chelsea at the end of January.

He had been nursing a groin problem for much of the season and was forced out of action after the condition worsened.

But a specialist has told Helguson he can step up his rehabilitation ahead of a planned return to the first team.

Fellow striker DJ Campbell resumed full training last week following a hamstring injury.

Their recoveries could be timely for Rangers given that Djibril Ciise is suspended again after being sent off during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Sunderland.

Helguson to act as a new signing at QPR to boost survival hopesHeidar Helguson is QPR’s top scorer this season despite missing the last two months

Djibril Cisse and Bobby Zamora were brought in by QPR to score the goals to fire them to Premier League safety, but it is the return of Heidar Helguson that may have the greater impact in achieving this feat.

From a goals perspective, Cisse’s arrival has made a difference as he has netted in three of his five appearances, but two red cards in the same period has somewhat spoiled his impact.

Meanwhile, Zamora has contributed just two goals since his arrival from Fulham.

Mark Hughes has claimed two victories and taken a total of just eight points from his ten Premier League games in charge of QPR and needs inspiration from elsewhere if the club are to escape the bottom three.

One player who could provide this spark is Helguson, who remains the club’s top scorer with nine goals this season, despite being on the injury list since January.

Helguson has only been available for two league games since Hughes was brought into Loftus Road and even in these he was arguably short of fitness because of a groin injury.

Now rested, he is back in full training and Hughes will be hoping that the scoring form of the Iceland striker is retained from earlier in the campaign.

The reliance on Helguson is especially surprising given that QPR also signed Jay Bothroyd and DJ Campbell at the beginning of the season to boost their striking options.

QPR’s latest defeat to Sunderland has seen them return to the relegation zone and they are now 1/3 in the Premier League odds to still be in the bottom three at the end of the season.

Life will not get any easier for QPR next as they host in-form Arsenal, who have won their last seven Premier League games to ease their own concerns for the campaign.

QPR’s odds are 7/2 to beat Arsenal.

I'd love to see HH back but I should think it's going to take him some time to get back to speed

Agree. And speed isn't is his major asset anyway! Don't really see him playing with Zamora, but as a possible replacement for him.

Get him on as soon as possible. He is the best striker in our team this season, I don't care what anyone says.
