It will be 10 years this summer since he's been with us. Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't we have the chance to sign him the year before ? He's been excellent ever since he arrived from Leeds in 2002, i would have to say he's been one of the manager's great signings. Him and Nemanja Vidic ant the centre of our defence have been awesome, this season he's had a slow start by his high standards but him and Jonny Evans have been outstanding and our one of the main reasons why we are up there challenging for the league.

Is he one of the manager's greatest signings ?

No he is not. He has never outperformed his last season he played for Leeds. Personally I thought he would become the best, but he isnt even the best in his position at the club

Based on everything we've won since he's been at club as a first choice CB, he should be at least mentioned with some of Fergies greatest signings.

Considering what we spent on him, no he's not. Rio's a good defender, but he's not one of the best in the world, and never has been, he has the talent, but he has to many concentration lapses. Vidic is a much better defender, and we paid alot less for him.

Pique was also alot better than Rio, and it still winds me up to this day that we let him go:biggrin:

Pique left when Rio and Vidic were by far the best CB partnership in the world, and he knew he wasn't going to break that partnership apart (including the fact he was behind Johnny Evans in the pecking order). Vidic is the better CB, but the way Rio complements Vidic makes that partnership unbelievably good. With his transfer fee in mind, I think all the money we've got from winning and competing in tournaments year round offsets the transfer fee paid for him. Would you say Rooney wasn't one of Fergies best buys because we paid a lot for him?

Correct. Pique left as SAF couldn't promise him regular first team football.

I thought I'd read that SAF wanted to keep Pique but the lad had been asking to go back to Spain for a few years befire SAF sold him ? Home sick or something ?

I thought it was because he wasn't good enough or seen to be to get game time. Wish we had kept him

Both you and I may be on the right track. Pique said: "I was at Manchester United and, sure, it was fantastic, but I was very young, I wasn't playing, I was stuck in the house, I missed my family and it was eating away at my head." Does sound like some home sickness and frustration about not playing. While we lost a great young player, fair play to SAF for morally not holding onto him especially when he wanted to go home.
