and I know each side will big up the bits they get near to, you top 5 or 6 and us the cup, but after the crap seasons we have had up here, aint it great to be both ending up with what looks like good seasons, long may it continue.

Lets be honest if neither team wins another game this season we will have had good ones.

Just to point out, we're statistically safe but your lot aren't so you may want another win or two. :p

I'm rather excited for next season when I think we will both be gunning for top 6 finishes.

Top 4 now Syd, we have Spurs in our sights.......................

Seriously though we've had a great season regardless what happens now. Europe would be nice but its not the be all and end all, I'm not even convinced we have the squad to be anywhere near coping. We've had plenty of fun in Europe down the years but I look at Fulham and Stoke, and its killed them this season. Double edged sword because it does help you keep and attract players.

Sunderland have recovered well. I can't help but wish Everton all the best, but O'Neill has done a cracking job there, there is no getting away from it.

Top 6, come on, you do 5 or 6 in a season you are supposed to be relegated and we look like 7 or 8 with MON having half a season and no new players.

    Top 4 surely?

Top weekend for both Premier League NE teams, hopefully we can do Liverpool and help Sunderland into 7th next weekend. Sounds very wrong, but I'm all for both teams to be up there and challenging, a derby that means something important will always be better than a lower midtable celebration of who's more mediocre!

Imagine if we get 5th and Sunderland get to the FA Cup final. Both NE teams in Europe at the expense of a London club

They'd be knocked out by some Lithuanian club before they got that far...

Seriously though, its great for the region, and can only help attract better players to both teams if we get into Europe, and have competetive teams in the league.

They'd have to win it to get a European place though unless their opponents were already in the Champions League, and neither Spurs nor Chelsea are guaranteed that anymore.

Got to say said last week even if Newcastle lost the last 9 games they'd achieved their pre season aims, still think Sunderland are a result or two away from having a successful season, which I would fully expect to happen.

Trust me, when I look at how things seemed in October, we have had a successful season, not what we wanted at the start of the season but top 10 and FA Cup quarter finals from bottom 3.

From that point yes you've had a great season since December no denying that, but the season started in August. Also the way things are going only an idiot would say they can remember a better combined year between Newcastle and Sunderland in Premier League history (with the possible exception of the 99/00 season).

Thats the funny thing. CL qualification should allow you to attract the calibre of players to offset this effect. Europa league however does not. Someone said it somewhere else, the EL has pros and cons, the CL only has pros

The club would receive between 30 and 40 million extra for qualifying for the champions league but would only receive about 5 million for getting into the europa.

Found that out the other day and thought I would share...

Would love Champions League but will still happily take a place in the Europa which would be good development for players like Ferguson, Vuckic and Abeid.
