I actually would have done a quid or two if it was more than 18/1.. I'm going to have another inspirational bet next race For some reason, at the minute, Raikkonen is calling out to me, but it might change.
Latest odds are up. What are people's opinions on updating the odds as they change? Last time out people were still getting 16/1 on a Rosberg pole for example, even after the odds had dropped to 10/1.
This is a great idea but will probably create an increased workload for someone here! There will be a need to make a note of the time a punter places a bet in the thread, so as to ensure that it applies to currently advertised odds. However, if this was done just once per day, it should keep it relatively simple and not cause a massive increase in workload. Perhaps most importantly, it would be likely to increase visits to the thread and may encourage greater interest in the game.
The workload thing isn't a problem cosi, it only takes a couple of minutes to pull them off the William Hill website. And I would just make sure I took everyone's bets before I updated the odds, so checking the times wouldn't be a problem either since people can only bet on the odds advertised in the OP. The only time this would be a problem is if there was a massive piece of breaking news, such as a driver change, which changed the odds significantly.
In that case, I'd say GO FOR IT! As for the implications of a significant change in the odds… Although I see what you're getting at, if everyone understands they may only use the odds you've published here in this thread, there ought be no argument; after all, if people are sufficiently interested, they will be able to anticipate such significant changes by checking William Hill etc. themselves! - - - o0o - - - However, if 'workload' is not a problem, there may be another, entirely different solution… This thread could make use of 'live' odds if, at the head of the thread, there were a great big link to an official betting site (or indeed a whole host of them!). All that would be required of our virtual punters would be to quote the following: Name of the site (with link to it if necessary). Time of that site's published odds. Simple description of the bet (e.g. Karthikeyan to win). Site's published odds. A quick look at a site's published odds when accepting someone's bet would make verification very simple. Besides, since this is only a bit of fun, I'm sure that no-one here would be tempted to try to cheat: the time-stamp of the post itself should reduce such a temptation - particularly if any such person knew that this would result in their immediate and permanent removal from the game (with no weak warnings or hollow threats!). Of course, you may feel this proposal too radical to introduce now that the game has begun; but in principle, if you like the concept, it, or something similar, could be introduced at some future stage.
The only issue with that Cosi is that the odds may change before someone gets a chance to verify them. If someone posts a bet in the middle of the night, and the odds have changed by the morning, then there is no way (unless I'm missing something obvious), to know whether the odds ever existed. I suppose a print-screen from the betting site may prevent this, but it is a lot more hassle.
