Done a really boring but simplistic table summarising what we still have to do to guarantee promotion, and/or being champions. It's got all 9 different scenarios covered based on the fact that Reading still have to play both West Ham and us away from home. Key: West Ham Max / Reading Max / Pts for Promotion / Pts for Champions West Ham beat Reading, Saints beat Reading: 93 / 88 / 89 / 94 West Ham beat Reading, Saints v Reading Draw: 93 / 89 / 90 / 94 West Ham beat Reading, Reading beat Saints: 93 / 91 / 92 / 94 West Ham v Reading Draw, Saints beat Reading: 91 / 89 / 90 / 92 West Ham v Reading Draw, Saints v Reading Draw: 91 / 90 / 91 / 92 West Ham v Reading Draw, Reading beat Saints: 91 / 92 / 92 / 93 Reading beat West Ham, Saints beat Reading: 90 / 91 / 91 / 92 Reading beat West Ham, Saints v Reading Draw: 90 / 92 / 91 / 93 Reading beat West Ham, Reading beat Saints: 90 / 94 / 91 / 95 Worst Case Scenario: - / - / 92 / 95 So.... We now need 14 pts from 7 games to guarantee promotion, and 17 pts to guarantee the Championship title. Lat
You do realise that when latviandream has worked out those permutations, West Ham and/or Reading have to max out their points in every game they play, outside of the ones referenced here..? Hence the headings. For example, do you see WHU winning everywhere else..? I don't. I bet their fans don't either. That leaves Reading, and the last I heard, they were auto-promoting two teams from this league.
So in the worst case scenario Saints need to win every game other than against Reading to win the league. I thought we already knew that! Personally I would love Saints to be Champions as I believe all our previous promotions have been through 2nd place. To be Champions of the whole Football League would be the icing on the very tasty cake!
No, Saints have been Division Three Champions, in the past. We were also Southern League Champions on several occasions, when the SL was the equivalent of the Football League. However, as far as championships and promotions are normally concerned, we are experts at being runners up.
