Russell for me is a bit of a liability. 11 appearences 3 yellows and 2 reds, and how many of those appearences have been as a sub. Good player but could cost us in the long run. Misses 4 games now, Hughes appears to be out of the question, so likely to return to Hollands and Stephens.

Indeed. Not a fixture I had us down to get anything from, though one always hopes. Seems like we battled away and kept them down to 3 shots on target despite our playing with 10 men for a third of the match, so nothing wrong with the spirit.

That's our hardest remaining fixture (on paper) out of the way. Not banking on anything from Carlisle or Preston away either, so anything we can pick up there will be a bonus so long as we win our last four home games (and they all look winnable).

Another thing is that there was apparently nothing questionable about anything Hamer did, except one poor but not disastrous clearance. Should help to settle his nerves.

A bit disappointing if unexpected. Always one that we were prepared to lose so it doesn't hurt as much as some. A bit frustrating to lose 1-0 to a penalty. In a stupid sort of way a good beating would have been easier to take. Sheffield wednesday winning makes it a bad day but how many times have the other top teams had days like this at our expense! All in all it's still in our own hands even if the safety margin is now of squeaky bummish proportions. Onwards and upwards. Russell no great loss IMHO. Want Danny G back!!!!

I can't agree with that. We have a six point margin for the title (assuming Sheff Utd win their game in hand) and an eight-point margin for automatic promotion with seven games in hand (four at home). How many clubs are ever in a better position? It is very rare that anyone runs away with it in any division.

Save your squeaky bums for two- or three-point margins.

If we cannot get at least promoted with our lead it will be because we don't deserve to. I think we have had more good luck than bad this season. Not too many long-term injuries (apart from Jackson who was a known fitness risk). Just Stephens and maybe Hughes who were both replaceable. And some wins where we only deserved one point.

I am not saying we have been "lucky", but overall we certainly haven't been "unlucky".

Sorry Eddie, I stick by the remark. My bum is squeaking. Your logic about the size of the gap is sound but my judgement is based on the fact that we are simply not playing well and appear to have run out of the luck we have been carrying all year. I believe we be fine. But it is sure proving to be much more of a strain than it should have been.

    Well, here's an interesting tweet...

@DarelRussell Todays result is all my fault. Reacted to a bad challenge gave a stupid pen away. No one else to blame. I can only offer my sincere apologise (sic) to everyone. Feel sick to my stomach. Fully accept blame and to be hammered for it.

...undoubtedly remorseful and no doubt very cathartic, but can we afford a player who, despite his value to the team appears constantly to be an accident waiting to happen?

It depends. What is his disciplinary record like with his previous clubs? Is there anywhere we can find out? If he has not been a previous magnet for trouble I would put it down to a combination of two things:
    (1) He is trying too hard. He is only on loan until the end of this season and may see no future for himself at Preston. To get a permanent contract at Charlton he is competing with Hollands, Hughes, Stephens and Pritchard for one of two CM places.
    (2) He is slowing down. He is 31. No great age but maybe enough to add a split second to his reactions.

That combination could result in him over-extending himself in challenges. If he can be coached to relax and play within his capacity he would still be a good player at Div One level. Not sure about the Championship though.

I am one of the last who is ever going to get edgy in our run in to the trophy, but weekly i look at the fixtures coming up for us and our closest rivals.

Shef united v Chesterfield is interesting as you can't say what is the top priorirty for chesterfield. Will they not really fight for the JPT final in order to store reserves for the Shef united match and survival or as a result of playing two games so quickly will they be cannon fodder for shef united ??

I'd say chesterfield will lose regardless to swindon, hopefully keep united to a draw, but that's optimism at it's best.

Obviously it is great that shef have to play twice in the next week, knowing themselves it involves their game in hand over weds, who have also put more pressure on united by going past them now.

Im impressed with our effort overnight, as we were down to ten men against hudds and only conceded a penalty.

We are in the box seat guys, don't panic at all, perspective has us being under the least amount of pressure imo of the top three.

It's 7 games to go. Effectively 6 clear of 2nd (sheff u should beat Chesterfield) and 8 clear of third. Goal difference will only be a factor if we start gaining points. It will soon disappear with a few defeats.

Russell didnt lose us the game, the ref did...

At the end of the first half Wagstaff wasnt tackled by Antony Kay he was assaulted (no yellow card), second half Russell is brought down by Kay, kicks out and deservedly gets sent off but Kay then gets a Yellow Card (surely that should have been his second yellow so we'd have both been down to 10-men.

Oh yeh I forgot, Lee Novak pushing Russell in the face after lashing out, now I thought that was also a Red Card offence? As I heard someone say, if you push someone in the face on the street you'll get arrested?

Going by Chris Powell's comments after the game I was astonished to read that the Ref wasnt allowed to look back over the decisions, I thought this happened all the time?

(P.S. the foul that led to the sending off should never have happened as two mins before Huddersfield got a throw in which clearly was a result of a tackle from their player)
