Carra, move on.your'e not going to get any sense out of this lot. Id just like to pose this question to anyone who is reading. If your brother died in war to lets say an Afghan, how would you feel if an extremist muslim sang such a song to you ? Please do take into account the fact, one man is in a war situation. The other at a football match !

I'd feel upset, but then again, admitting you've made a stupid comparison doesn't do your argument a whole lot of good, does it? I'd also feel pretty weird about my brother going to another country with a profession that is inherently going to lead to deaths, although that's another matter altogether. I dealt with the point about affected relatives with football chants above. Naturally it will be upsetting to them, but they should avoid games where that kind of thing will flare up and allow the passion to go on unabated until it gets old. Trying to stop it only makes people more determined to rebel.

Well I'm glad you're not asking for petty enforcements of your moral convictions like so many journalists have, saying that lifetime bans, arrests and ejections from the stadium for anyone singing these songs are the way forwards. I don't think chants about the dead will affect the players on the pitch too much, but they certainly show something about the group identity of those singing them. That's why I think they are important not to be dismissed as 'disgusting' etc. when it's so obvious that laughing at misfortune is a widespread and natural part of the human psyche.

I think that giving people an outlet like the football to be thuggish, horrible and nasty is a good thing. As long as they don't damage the person or property of innocent parties, I think anything should be able to happen. It's so difficult these days to even have fun at a match - it certainly requires a lot of drink to be able to witness some of the dross Leeds and Millwall have experienced over the last season(s)!

What on earth are you on about? I'm not advocating murders here, just saying that I don't think sick chants are particularly deplorable when you look at all the contextual factors I detailed, even though not one of those arguing against them has really considered them very deeply.

Think you've got the wrong end of the stick. And sorry for telling the truth saying I'd be upset. Christ, does everything have to be a superlative these days? OMG I'D BE SO DISTRAUGHT AND SUICIDAL AND DESTROYED AND THINGS. There, happy?

That reply was in response to TC saying that no Leeds fans would be offended by Millwall fans singing about your dead fans.<ok>

I don't want to consider it deeply. I know what's right from wrong in my head, without having to think deeply about it.<ok>

Your grasp of the English language is exemplary mate. Do have any life experience at all though ? I don't really think iv'e got the wrong end of the stick, when you tell me that sick chants of the kind we are discussing here are not "PARTICULARLY DEPLORABLE". Until something happens to your family members/friends,you will never know !

Of course some Leeds fans would be offended as would some Millwall by the same chant.Ignore or laugh at fools is the best option as most will grow out of it.

It's more reasonable to be threatened with a ban for taunting someone over a murder, than it is to have the threat of a three year ban for singing 'does your boyfriend know you're here' at a Brighton game.

    That really is ridiculous.

Agreed, although the datedness of the gay jokes at Brighton, fish jokes at Hull and sheep-shagging jokes at Welsh sides and Leeds are worthy of bans in themselves.

At least when Man U came to Elland Road, they didn't dress up in other teams' shirts and wave their flags. <doh>

This thread reminds me of A.A. Milne's great book "Winnie the Pooh". All the animals in it were downright stupid but NONE of them KNEW that they were STUPID. That's why it made you laugh.

I actually admitted that songs like that are stupid, but made a case for why people should be allowed that indulgence from time to time. But do keep on with your high-horse criticisms.
