Arsène Wenger says his focus in the transfer market will be on quality not quantity this summer. The Arsenal manager has been linked with a host of players, with some observers predicting a major rebuilding project. The Frenchman insists he does not expect to make a raft of changes to his squad and says that any signings he does make will be top class. “We will not be a lot on the market, quantity-wise I mean. Quality-wise, certainly,” he said. “But the [maximum] number of the squad is 25. We have many players out on loan and we will take a gamble if we find top, top quality of course. “But don’t forget we have many players out on loan and we have not had Jack Wilshere or Abou Diaby for the whole season. “These players will be back and it means that number and quality-wise we are strong because we are in the position we are in without these players.” Wenger admits that he also hopes to wrap up any transfer deals earlier than last summer. “You want to make me say that last year was bad and I agree with you - last year was terrible for us
Hopefully though if he gets any indication that Van Persie will be leaving he will act quicker to avoid a situation like with Arteta. Sure we hope RVP stays, but if they get a feel he might leave we shouldn't leave it for the last day.
Is anyone really suprised? Having a late flurish in the season really doesn't tell you much about how well we are doing. We are just going through a purple patch at the moment. The real result is what happens next season for the first 4 months and then we'll have a better idea. What is certain, RVP represents over 50% of our attack at the moment and for us to progress, everyone has to stand up and be counted. We have shown good discipline these past weeks but we need to do this consistently over the following seasons, otherwise we'll end up with nothing again....
Typical Wenger. This lack of ambition will convince RVP to leave. Another mediocre season beckons, cheers Arsene you stubborn old prick.
I think this is the correct approach. We do not need to add loads of players to the team just 2 or 3 top quality players. I think it is also clear that we need to try and sell some of the players on loan (denilson, bendtner etc) to make room in the squad.
Abou Diaby will be like a new signing then arsene Still he is correct. Our squad will be fantastic if we add 3/4 quality players to the top end. The players like theo can be squad players and I think the title is ours
I think these comment show arsene has changed his approach and isnt stubborn. He knows we need quality to win the title. Previously he hadnt admitted this
You'd think after no success in 7 years and being over 60 he would lose some patience and think, WTF lets just buy 2-3 proper players and see if i can win something. You have to give it to him, he treats Arsenal like it was his own....
Nope it's the same ol Arsene to me. But seriously, i have a few words of advice to Arsene, and they are - unwanted players, van and cliff.....
I think arsene tried to offload the junk last summer and couldnt due to them being bad, them being on big wages and maybe arsenal holding out for too big fees. With a year further knocked off each of these players contracts it should be easier to flog them all this summer.
I've heard it all before. Actions speak louder than words my friend. I'm waiting for the upcoming summer transfer market and see what we do. Firstly getting rid of all the unwanted players we have and then buying some quality. The biggest problem we're having is shifting the rubbish.....
I've never thought that we need to replace huge numbers of players in the team. We have a team that finishes in the top 4 every year and that means that, despite what everyone tells you about a lot of our fist team being crap, they are close to being good enough to win trophies. The tragedy is that we havent been able to find those one or two players we needed to carry us over the line. In some cases those were reserves we needed to cover for injury, in other years it was replacements for players leaving. The Wilshere/Ramsey/Gibbs wave of players is now coming through to support the Song/RVP/Walcott wave and the wave behind them is ready to step up to the reserves. To be honest, I'm not sure that we need anyone except Podolski to back up RVP. Our squad is going from strength to strength and unlike Chelsea or Man Utd, we don't have to fear our players getting a year older. We have a lot of players outside the first team with huge potential and when I refuse to believe that some of these players that are being talked about are so much more special than Oxo, Ryo, Bartley, Miquel, and a host of others, let alone players like Song and Walcott that seem to get hammered for keeping us in the running for the top 4 despite playing on a team with no full-backs.
Tell me about it. We have most of these players out on loan and still, no one wants them!!! I think you're right on the wages front....
I would love to believe that he means to bring in 2 or 3 top players but no-one on this board can say that we haven't heard it all before. It starts with 'we are looking to bring in top players' Then 'If we find the right players we will of course bring them in' Then 'we couldn't find the right players' Then 'X and Y will be like new signings' Then 'unfortunately he told me he didn't want to stay so I had to let him go' I will only believe the cycle has been broken when RVP signs a new deal and I see a smiling picture of some world class new signings wearing Arsenal shirts on Arsenal.com
