how would you console yourself? All season it's looked achievable but the thought of having it ripped from our grasp at this stage would be too awful to bear. I admit it does seem unlikely but we have to steel ourselves to the possibility that it could happen.
So, if against all the odds Pompey did manage to avoid the drop I would have to take some comfort from Saints getting promotion but obviously, that was expected. Getting to the Prem is all very well and good but I have had my heart set on a Pompey relegation party and that freak result against Brum was a disaster. Quite frankly, I'm worried that our season may be ruined at the death.

At this stage of the season, I would be gutted

HOWEVER, we would be stronger for it and we should be able to aim higher next year

How distorted is your support of your favoured team..? Getting to the Prem is all very well..? I suggest you concentrate on supporting Saints and let the Blue few look out for themselves.

I honestly don't understand how some people can appear to be more excited by the prospect of another club failing, whoever it is, rather than their own team succeeding. Perhaps someone can logically explain it to me..?

Totally agree - anyway, if anything, we don't want them to go down as League 1 was the springboard to our success.

I suppose this is a joke. If it helps, it would still be pretty miraculous for Pompey to stay up.

Definitely looks like a joke to me...you're supposed to read the title, think that he means a late-season collapse, and then read the text to see that it actually treats it as a given. There are some rabid Pompey-haters in these parts, but I cannot imagine a single person trading Saints' promotion for Pompey's relegation.

Good grief. Did you really think the thread was serious? You're a bit self-righteous aren't you?

I read what I see. I saw no winking emoticons, I saw no humour. Remember that this is a writing medium, and if you want to be dry in your humour, you have to remember that we're not telepathic. We need the odd clue.

I thought it was funny...a joke with a twist. But to the question you didn't ask....not to get promoted now would be practically unbearable. It's all very well saying it would be achieved next year, but nothing is ever certain. How often have teams nearly gone up and then struggled the next year. As for the question you did ask, I don't care about Pompey being relegated as long as we go up.

    Probably a bit too subtle.

    I'm just going to say:

Why all the pessimistic posts? We're clearish of the play offs!

    Let's have a positive atmosphere!

First and foremost I want us to be promoted. Secondly, seeing them in League One would give us "Best team in Hampshire" status once more but we wouldn't have our South Coast Derby (if we don't get promoted and they stay up)

I don't care where they finish up as long as it's below us <nahnah>

Nice one :) I started off reading it ready to have a go at a pessimistic post then cottoned on to the satire and it made my smile.

Some people need to get a sense of humour.

The way West Ham seem to be stalling I think it's very unlikely you will slip up now. As each game goes by it looks more and more likely that it will be Saints and Reading in the automatic places.

As for us, I've been pretty well resigned to relegation for a few weeks now. I look at the 4 points we've picked up from our last two games and try to resist the temptation to have positive thoughts, as my team cruelly conspires to give us hope! If we win at Coventry and Brizzle lose at Middlesbrough I fear my blood pressure will start to rise at an alarming rate!

I'd be turning to the drink as well Devon. Great result on Saturday but nothing really changed, you still need those three away wins to stay up.

Thanks Devon for those positive comments. As for Pompey, well what's the best for them? After coming out of the last administration I was surprised to see the money splashed around on journeymen footballers (Norris, Benjani, Lawrence) on high wages! Many years ago you had a guy called George Smith signed from Barrow - not a bad player. I would have thought this might be a better route for Pompey to pursue if the club survives. Get players from the lower reaches who are hungry to play at a slightly higher level than the cast-offs from Premiership clubs.

I almost posted a reply to Saintsfan4life's first post, suggesting that he read the OP again carefully to see the irony oozing at the edges. I think that the apparent subject of your post (us not going up)was just too sensitive for humour, It's Only A Game. I must admit that Before I read all the way through, my first reaction was, "boy, is he going to get some flak for this!!!!"

This thread has been a bit of an eye-opener for me. What I thought was an obvious attempt at satire turned out to be mis-understood and on top of that not even read properly.
Next time I'll do a "What's eveyone having for tea?" type of article, see how that goes.
