I never felt unsafe because of a crowd surge on the terraces, we always used to try and stand with a barrier directly behind us. The worst thing that happened to me was a cup of scalding oxo down my back curtesy of the drunk behind me.

As long as they retain seating areas for families, elderly and those who don't want the risk of being cruched/jossled then I say yes go for it.

I was at a league cup final Arsenal v Luton in the early nineties (can't remember the year) and was in the Arsenal end as a neutral. We were so jammed in it scared the **** out of me. When Arse scored the entire body of fans started jumping around and you would be crushed in so you would move with the crowd. I am not exagerating to say that you would move forwards about four or five rows before going back again. At one point i had my arm stuck between the back of one fan and the chest of another for over twenty minutes and I couldn't move it. The people up the front must have been in real danger.

Wouldn't want to go back to that again so I hope they bring in tighter controls on numbers.

Why cant we just accept that some sections of fans and away sections want to stand, its their choice, make them liable

Can't really tell too well from the pic, but wouldn't viewing the game be a problem when it was converted to seating as the metal bar infront of you would surely restrict a bit of your view?
