Sports Minister Hugh Robertson says the Government will consider reintroducing standing areas at top-level football matches, 21 years after Lord Justice Taylor recommended terracing be outlawed in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster.

I would like to see this happen as I much prefer to stand at matches. Obviously the safety issues have to be considered because another Hillborough is unthinkable, but as the fans are no longer caged in behind fences, the safety problems should already be reduced.

Hopefully standing sections will improve the atmosphere at games, and I would expect these sections to become the noisiest areas of most grounds.

    What do you think?

If done like German terracing i think it'll be fine. It's also much harder to get into the ground without a ticket these days, so over crowding will not be a problem.

Personally, i think we should do it.

    P.S. Make this a poll? <ok>

Terraces are quite dangerous, I got flattened as a kid several times with people "rushing" when we scored. I don't think it makes a great deal of difference, a lot of people stand all the way through games anyway a lot of the time.

Alfie, i agree that this used to be a problem, but this wouldn't be so bad anyway with it being much harder for people without tickets to get in.

    Also i suggested doing it the 'German' way. This is a picture of how many places have their standing area's;

You can sit if you want, or it folds up well out of the way not restricting you. Also, with it being essentially a barrier, this would stop the crushing. <ok>

There is no issue with terracing in Germany and as pointed out it 's much harder to get into grounds without tickets (unless you are Liverpool supporters in Greece <whistle>).

Bring them back and the atmosphere will return to certain parts of the ground.

Note that I'd still advocate keeping seating in large sections to maintain the family element.

The stadium of ****e would have to keep some seats otherwise the Mackems would have nothing to throw.

It's a well known fact that Mackems lack the ability to stand for a long period of time... for that reason, bring 'em back! Make them sit on the floor <laugh>

That picture of the German stand is what I would recommend. There are people who want to sit though, so seating areas as well.

This would be perfect, SJP could have the family enlcosure still, then the Gallowgate and areas of SJH could be all seating to generate as much atmosphere as possible.

The lower tiers round pitchside and the Gallowgate could be standing only

Youd think that the chance of safer terracing and More ££££ through tickets the Prem League would jump at the chance

No surprise there. PL clubs won't be able to charge the same sky-high prices for standing areas as they do for seats. Of course, they are claiming their only concern is for the safety of women and children.

In any case, I think seated areas can be more dangerous than terraces. If you are pushed hard from behind while standing your legs are jammed against the seat in front and you have nowhere to go. Broken limbs could easily result.

Surely a vote from registered season ticket holders per club should be conducted before the FA dismisses all of this as nonsense.

If a large enough majority want it then look into phasing the terraces back in whilst still retaining the seating for those who want it.

    Not sure that is feasible.

There is a country wide ban on terraces so the ban would only be relaxed if there was enough of a buy in from all clubs to re-introduce it.

I think it would be acceptable if they introduced something saying that 'x% of each ground can be made standing area's with these conditions' where these conditions are that there must be some sort of division between rows and other legal mumbo jumbo.
