I mean, let's face it. The Scottish game would die if Rangers weren't around.

There would be no competition. No other teams would challenge for trophies. It would be a one horse race.

    Oh wait......

It is hilarious that Rangers fans are getting full of the schadenfreude, not realising that they are dismantling the argument that their club is indispensable to the Scottish game.

"We don't do walking away.....or irony!"

The amount of celebrating they're doing is embarrassing. I'd expected a couple of ha ha giruy type posts but the lengths they're going to is beyond belief. It says something for how far they've fallen that they're celebrating a Celtic defeat more than they celebrate a victory by their own team (not that they get many these days).

Anyone who didn't know anything about football who had stumbled across this site would think Rangers had won the League Cup yesterday.

    Desparate stuff.

What was meant to be the greatest weekend of all tim time was a bit of a let down to the plastics.

Rewind a few months and this was to be the weekend to end all weekends. St Paddy's day, Rangers dead and buried, League CUp Final and the start of the treble, Ireland v England.

Oh well, at least you've still got your Guiness hat.

It is a cup final. It is a game where anything could happen. Kilmarnock came and played football and got their just desserts.

They proved that we don't need rangers to provide competition.

    Get that right up you.

I think it's fair play guys.

Fighting for 2nd. Fighting for a win. Fighting to keep their history. Fighting for existence. Let them have their moment, especially as it shows how far they've fallen in such a short amount of time. The 'People's Club', resorting to celebrating their rival's defeat to a team they themselves can't win against, only 1 day after they've taken yet another shafting from a team we pumped 4 nil the week before.

Best part was "we don't do walking away", yet by the 85th minute most of them had f***ed off to thumb their lift back down the road.

How long though will it be before Sally's head is being called for? Surely they aren't that thick they seriously think he's doing a good job!? Only reason he's being allowed to stuble from one defeat to the next is the whole "tough season" + "club legend" equation.
I enjoy seeing his line ups now, in which he can just give any wee guy a game just so long as they bring their boots, because he knows all the apologists will cover his fat a*** due to the current club woes.

Problem is tv money. Would the tv companies perceive a lack of competition and just withdraw?

Would the Scottish League become equivalent to the League of Wales?

With the lack of money, would Celtic just dumb down to everyone elses standards thus guaranteeing competition but at a low level of quality?

Just asking. No idea if any of this is likely but it is some of the arguments being debated south of the border

Correct, the standard of play would drop even lower than it is today, but for some reason, people can't or are unwilling to see this, commonly known as idiots.

Celtics annual wage bill is hovering around the £22 million a year mark.

Withdraw tv money, prize money for winning the league reduces, prize money for winning (or losing in the final) cup competitions reduces and Celtic will have to drastically reduce the wage bill. The 'quality' they possess in their squad will quickly and vastly be reduced.

It's alright though, they might get through to the 2nd qualifier for the champions league one year <ok>

Which just shows how dependant on Murdoch the English leagues are.

Average TV payout per team in the SPL is £1.3million (Celtic and Rangers get slightly more than that and the rest of the teams get slightly less depending on how often they're on TV).

I'm actually fed up typing this <doh>

Notably, the only people in Scotland who'll agree with you on this (and rabidly so) are Rangers fans.

The logic of the OP goes unchallenged.

It is a sore one to lose any game. Let alone a cup final but is Scottish football in a healthier state today than it was yesterday? The answer is probably yes.

A team from outwith the "big one" has taken a trophy. A 10/1 shot in the final has taken a trophy. That will do wonders for the club. The departure off the scene of Rangers shall certainly mean more days like that for more clubs. That is certainly good for the game. Right?

Exactly. With no Rangers the chances of other teams winning trophies and finishing in the top two of the SPL increases. No Rangers = increased competition.
