True that. Wenger would have kept him and let him go on a free, my suspicion is that had Nasri stayed, he might have signed a new contract this year. But that is water under the bridge now. As for RVP, I think Wenger will keep him - and I think the board may have a different approach this time, after seeing the turmoil it caused when our best players were sold. That said, it's my opinion that RVP will sign a new contract with Arsenal in the summer anyway.
let's hope so. If we buy a class player, after a good finish to the season - then RVP may take a good payrise and stay. PLEASE.
I think the advent of computer games simulating football management means that fans credit managers with far too much control over events. A lot of managers don't even get to choose the players a club buys or sells. I very much doubt that Wenger, who I think does get to ask for a player to be bought, has any control over how much Arsenal are willing to pay for the player, or what wage is offered. If that were allowed, a manager could bankrupt the club inside a season, and why wouldn't he? Any reasonable person wouldn't expect the manager to know the financial ins and outs of the club. Is the manager supposed to know the expected cash flow at the club? What the sponsorship deals will bring in etc.?
As I prefixed the entire post by the words "I think..." It should be obvious to anyone with a small amount of reading comprehension, that I am not claiming to "know" anything. Edit - although as I posted in another thread about the Hazard situation : The article I saw this is in is here http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...-swoop?cc=5901 The interesting thing I got out of this was that Redknapp clearly has no clue what is being offered for the player, or what the deal would be, or whether negotiations are underway. When we castigate Wenger for not buying players, we seem to (obviously) imagine he has more control at Arsenal than Rednapp has at Spurs.
Yeh but as far as we are aware wenger is one of the last old school managers who have big control over the club (another being fergie). So wenger can be held far more accountable than other managers. Also wenger must decide who gets new contracts and who he wants to pursue.
Really - any reason why? I'm sure Wenger puts together the list of players he recomends/wants and the list of players he doesn't want anymore - I agree with that. I don't think he will be the one that runs the club financially and decides what the club can spend on players & wages, that would be very unusual and a massive risk for the shareholders/owner.
Because it would be different to almost every other company in almost every other field, in almost every other country in the world. Managers are given a number of positions they can hire, and the salary range for each position. They are also given a budget for recruiting. Go over that budget, hire more people that you have approved, or pay them outside the range without approval and you are fired.
Yes I agree. Except wenger will say this guy deserves 50k a week or this guy deserves 20k a week. Or this guy doesnt deserve a new deal... He will rate the players and give guidelines to the financial people on what deals they should look to sign players on. And like I say wenger will have way more power than people like kenny with comoli as his directgor of footie.
In every organisation in the world somebody makes those decisions. Your mistake is to assume that Arsenal football club has the same decision making structure as a corporation - it may or it may not.
Id agree with that. I think the mistake people make is when they say, "Wenger should have offered more for this player" or "Wenger should pay RVP what he needs to get him to stay at the club" I think that is the stuff that he has very little say in.
Absolutly. I agree with this 100%. The structure probably is nothing to do with wenger. The wages they can offer rvp are nothing to do with wenger. But wenger must of told the board that people like bendy, denilson, diaby and vela were worthy of new contracts. I understand sometimes you buy people in and they dont work out for whatever reason. But wenger has worked with bendy for years and years on a daily basis and his judgement on the lad was stupid. We should never of given bendy such a lucrative deal that we literally couldnt sell him in the summer. Having players we cant sell who are draining the clubs resources every week is bad management. It happens in all clubs but has happened too much at arsenal int he last 3-4 years. Wenger and the board must take responsibility for this. Arsene was adamant that some of these players I have mentioned were part of a "special" group who would win stuff. Well sorry but he was wrong. MASSIVELY wrong and should be critised for it. He is still a great manager and we should keep him for sure. But I hope the board changes its wage policy and that arsene persuades them that we need to do this to be succesful on the pitch.
Well I think we did come close and we would be closer if we hadn't lost Nasri and Fabregas. Not sure if I picked up your "adamant" type vibe but there is no doubt he thought they were good enough to win. There is a long stretch between being good enough to win and actually winning though. Losing Fabregas was a big hit to Wenger's plans as were the injury hit three years we have just had. I doubt very much if the board will change its wage policy. We simply cant afford a wage bill like Chelsea, or Man City where money is no object, and our wages are bang in line with Manchester United when you compare our turnover. I know people look at Bendtner and say, "He is on way too much", but the guy walks into the Sunderland team, and are you really telling me you think he is being paid significantly more than you would expect the first choice Sunderland striker to be paid? I'm not sure you can say "MASSIVELY" anything. Taking Bendtner, he is obviously good enough for Sunderland. Vela is good enough for Primera Division football. Sorry, that isn't MASSIVELY wrong. And they are both playing in the top flight at an age younger than a lot of players. Do you think even Wenger expects every single youth signing to be a success?
No! they are there to enjoy prawn sarnies, and G&Ts - while watching their investment and expenses go up every year.
