Yeah it's just the first qually session, calm down, race pace could be different. McLaren could be a second a lap quicker then ;)

Red Bull were 8/10ths ahead of McLaren last year. McLaren are 4/10ths ahead of Lotus this year and 7/10ths ahead of Red Bull.

Thankyou Michael, for your determination in qualifying, your input to an ever progressing team, and outqualifying an obviously less experienced (in terms of pressure) Nico Rosberg.

EDIT: On another note, I feel for Raikkonen please do not give him the stick many gave to Michael on his first season of his comeback.

With the out-lawed EBD, only experience can cure an oversteering monster.

So happy, well done to Hamilton and Button..

Grosjean, what the hell are you on !!

It's a great race to start the year but it's often said that Melbourne is not an aero track and we might not see the RB8's real attributes until Malaysia or China.

Still it's nice to spend a day in hope of a season ahead that is more about driver skill after two years of EBD domination.

In times compared with RBR to the McLaren last season which was what? 4tenths and that would suggest today with nearly 8 tenths from McLren to Red Bull is the only evidence we have at the moment.

Yeah it's a wacky claim, but it's a valid one as one gap is larger than the other hence I can already say at this current time this McLaren is more dominant than the RB7 was.

What about Mercedes and Lotus? and Button for that matter. Hamilton has it a lot harder.

Eight tenths.

Today McLaren are only 4/10ths ahead of the nearest competitor.

It is not valid at all! <laugh>

1. It is ridiculous to try and extrapolate the first quali session of the season to the entire year.
2. Red Bull was on pole by a bigger margin last year than Mclaren are this year anyway.

So it does not make sense whichever way you try and look at it. <doh>

Some great performances along with some which were atrocious.

Hamilton's Pole lap was scintillating. Schumacher did well, although I feel Rosberg had the pace to do better. Button was very close to Hamilton at the end. Vettel's error is the most likely explanation for being out-qualified by Webber - who did a great job. Raikkonen was appallingly slow, whilst Grosjean showed what that Lotus Renault can do. Alonso was doing a valiant job with a difficult car which eventually got the better of him; but his very poor team mate has effectively signed away his contract…

Best team: McLaren.
Worst team: Ferrari by a mile.

I agree, Hammy has it harder than ever with Button/Grosjean/Schumi (a 0.4tenths gap between the top four) breathing down his neck, pure racing is going to occur tomorrow.. experience will count unlike the last few years.
EDIT: Did Rosberg buckle under pressure?

Yeah just looked it up just a second ago mate cheers. Ok a fairly similar car to the RB7 last year and the RB8 being similar to the mclaren last year in the sense they are still getting used to the car.

The difference is though this gap could increase very quickly if RBR are unable to get past the likes of Mercedes and Lotus where as McLaren last year only had to worry about Lotus for a few races and then it was just a matter of beating webber.

Was just lucky Rosberg messed up a bit.

And did I miss something in the storm but, did Lewis even bother about the last timed lap or did he lay off at the end? Anybody see what he was setting?

Put average laps of both teams together in Australia this and last year.

Mclaren: 1 25 0 on average.
Red Bull: 1 25 6.
Lotus cannot be used due to kimi.. But still, 4 tenths if only on Grosjean

2011:
Mclaren:1 24 5
Red Bull: 1 23 9

Each way is 6 tenths. Mclaren have a dominant car :(

Grosjean!! <diva>

Hopefully people will take him more seriously now. I think Mercedes will drop back in the race when their FDRS is restricted, I don't know why the FIA have declared that legal but banned Lotus's reactive ride height.

Massa's an absolute disgrace, Alonso only set one time in Q2 and it was over a second faster than anything Massa managed in the whole 15 minute session.

Wow!!! What a qualifying session! Who could have thought after the dominance of Red Bull and Vettel that they would be left languising in 5th and 6th with the McLaren's locking out the front row?! Fine job by Lewis and Jenson. What an effort by Grosjean - where did that come from?! Performance of the day it has to be said. And what about the silver knight in 4th place? Out performing Nico?! Knowing Michael he'll be disappointed he didn't get higher.

Disappointed not to see Fernando up there. It's running as it looks - like a dogs dinner. But it's interesting that by far the most beautiful of cars is comfortably on the first row. McLaren have surprised themselves i'm sure, but most of all they've surprised everyone else...especially Red Bull. It's almost as if F1 has found itself in a surreal universe. Brundle has just said on sky (watching online) 'the tide has turned'.

Not a tide Martin. It's a ****ing tsunami.
