So Argentina is allegedly on the verge of returning to the calendar from next year. Well, at least we used to have a track at Buenos Aries I suppo- You can probably guess where this is going. What am I bid for the following: 1) Hermann Tilke to design 2) There to be construction issues but that they will be sorted out 3) Drivers will praise it for the overtaking opportunities it provides 4) Lots of long straights followed by hairpins 5) A dull as ****ing ditchwater race?
Why would you have it at a place where there is not a track when you have got a place which has this? please log in to view this image
Haven't we had this discussion? Give me a minute... EDIT: Oh, sorry Mifune - it was you. I mentioned this new possibility on the odds & sods thread this morning but opinions have been expressed suggesting that it won't come off because Argentina's economy is about as healthy as Greece's at the moment and it's all just posturing by the Argentinian presidentess. The Autosport article sounded very sure of itself, though. You do like that circuit, don't you, Mifune?
I'd be surprised if they can get something ready for 2013. The last three new F1 tracks have all had delays/problems with construction.
Discussed already. I don't see anything as having changed significantly. Mifune's preferred track is indeed a beauty but it'll never see F1 cars for the reasons I mentioned before.
Autosport mentioned a Mexico GP a few months back in which Carlos Slim's name was mentioned. He could cover the financing of wining and dining sponsors... I mean making a good track. Whether it'll ever comes true depends on many things but with Canada, USAx2, Brazil already having races I bet Bernie would drop one or more if we did get Argentina and/or Mexico. probably Canada.
Don't forget we've got Russia due for 2014, New Jersey next year... Really worried what the calendar will look like by the middle of the decade. Would love to see a return to Mexico, especially if we can go back to the Mexico City track. Wonder if Bernie would deliberately withhold the race if it meant getting one over Carlos Slim?

Everything about that track screams awesome, whats the name and location? Still it would have as much chance of getting on the F1 calendar as the old Nurburgring behemoth
It is called the Potrero de los Funes Circuit, and is in San Luis - Argentina. The lap is only just under 4 miles and they have the FIA GT Championship and also FIA GT1 World Championship there, so I do not really see why they could not have F1 there as well.
Only F1/GP2/GP3 races around Monaco, Canada and Valencia as far as i'm aware, meaning the track is purpose built for it. I hate to say it but even if someone had the money to put the amazing track in F1, we'd have to wait a season for it to be safety checked, and more tyre barriers be put around it. I have the impression we will never see this track in F1 cause they may have to move the walls back, ruining it in the process
Monaco was purpose built for traffic, Portrero de los Funes was purpose built for race cars. They just need to replace the concrete walls with that stuff they use instead of tyre barriers and it would be fine.
Cornering speeds are far slower at Monaco; and at Canada there are big run-offs in the fast corners where it really matters. What we have here in Argentina is closer to Zandvoort (in fact, it's rather like a slightly scaled up version of Holland's most famous track); and several corners are reminiscent of Zandvoort's infamous 'Tarzan' corner; which, as speeds and death tolls rose in unison, ultimately sealed its fate. Valencia is not as dangerous as it looks, where glancing blows on walls are the only real threat.
