He's signed for Notts County on loan until the end of the season! Wouldn't have minded him coming back to The Valley...
I'd have him back tomorrow. Mind you I've got a thing about wingers. He's a bit like Green. Often infuriating but you just know that there is something in there that can explode at any time. Wonder why it diodn't work out for him at Leeds? I'm surprised we didn't go in for him if he's available on loan. Mybe there's baggage theer that i don't know about. Hopefully he can do us a favour by helping Notts Co out in their games against Sheffield(s) and Huddersfield. I think they still have to play all three.
I remember PP saying that Sam's problem was when the teams swapped sides and he would be over on the opposite side of the pitch to the dugout that he would go missing and became lazy. I'd have to agree with him. On his day there aren't many better wingers in the league. On his off days, there aren't many worse.
Not for me... He is imo no better than Green or Waggy. I could be about to be shot down in flames here, but: When have we ever re signed a player who's been as good or better the second time around...? Off the top of my head I can't think of any... (I have been up since 4am so the old brain ain't exactly performing at full capacity)
If you asked for any others I wouldn't have had an answer. ANyone else think of any more? Powell was awesome in his first spell, but I thought the year he re-joined whilst we were in the prem was productive. The 3rd spell was when his legs looked like they were going.
Franco Got to be honest though, I'm not at all 'suprised' that CP didn't move for him even if he did know that he was available. This season is a new chapter in CAFC history, its meant to be a fresh start and a new Charlton Athletic, signing players from a few years ago only brings back memories of, and connections to, our terrible decline and would be somewhat regressive. Green and Waggy will do for me, for now at least.
Not sure if this counts, but we had David Whyte on loan for a spell in 1991/92, and then signed him a couple of years later, when I believe he scored a hatful of goals
I remember the first game we played in League One, my defining memory of it being Lloyd Sam tearing up the Wycombe defence and me thinking to myself 'we're going to destroy this league'. He always seems to do great in the summer months then disappear for the rest of the season. Then again, can someone name me a winger we've had who isn't terrible inconsistent?
It's not really "not worked out" for him, he's had 4 starts this season and 4 assists and has been a valuable member of the squad. He's certainly too good for League 1. It's just at the moment he has Snodgrass, McCormack, White and Rogers all ahead of him in the pecking order and Warnock is making sure he gets game time and is helping out his mate Curle at Notts County. I wouldn't be at all surprised if, assuming we don't get promoted, Sam signs a new contract in the summer and stays at Leeds.
Not sure about 'too good for League One', he didn't really set the world alight for us a couple of years ago, in what was a fairly strong team. That said he was (and presumably still is) a great player though and like SuperChris said earlier, when on form he'd probably be the best winger in this league. Appreciate you coming on here and giving us your thoughts mate
I wouldn't necessarily say he's too good to play League 1 football, but he's certainly a class above any wingers I've seen currently playing below the Championship. He's good enough to start for most Championship sides IMO, just suffers from the classic winger's inconsistency you've mentioned, which, sadly for him, Snoddy, White etc. don't.
