On the 21st Jan we beat Reading away to go 5th. Since then, although unbeaten, we have only won once. As such we haven't pushed on but stood still. We now are faced with the task of getting going again to push on to the play-offs. Unfortunately it starts against Cardiff, who have a very strong home record (they have 7 of the last 11 games at home) so unfortunately I don't hold out much hope for a result. I think the top 4 will finish up with Soton, West Ham, Reading and Cardiff. (though hopefully not in that order - want West Ham to lose in the play-offs). Hopefully will leave final two between us, Boro, Birm and B'pool. Mathematically we can do it, but not now holding my breath. Think it will be a case of consolidation. Hope to keep the players we want for next season, get rid of the deadwood and for NB to bring in some fresh players.
Without checking the tables above show W2 D6, 12 points out of 24 = 50% points ratio. You need a 66% points ratio to get into the promotion places. So this unbeaten run is clearly not promotion form.
That's the thing about statistics, they're so easy to manipulate: The actual unbeaten run is W3 D6, 15 points out of 27 = 56% points ratio. 50% over a season = 69 points (probably just missing out on play-offs) 56% over a season = 77 points (probably making the play-offs)
Well, actually, we don't have one or two games in hand on the teams above us, we have two games in hand over Southampton, Blackpool and Brighton, one game in hand on West Ham, Reading and Cardiff and no games in hand over Boro and Birmingham. Also, I'm not sure why anyone would assume we would win our games in hand, particularly when they are both away from home. However, the point of this thead is that DMD is criticising people expressing their frustration at the recent set of results, claiming they shouldn't because the unbeaten run is something to be proud of. My point is thatif you draw all your games in an unbeaten run and those around you win and lose their games, you will fall further behind. Actually, it's not rocket science, it's simple mathematics. My second, point is that if you have witnessed the games we have drawn on this magnificent run, I think you would have to be in complete denial if you don't come away from them feeling frustrated. In fact THAT is exactly what Nick Barmby has stated after every one of the draws.
Dutch i work inWest yorskshire with Sheff U, Wednesday and Huddersfield fans. Its a standing joke every time Hudders draw- eh up looks like tha's going on an unbeaten run again!! Meaning, and the hudders lads agree it meant fuk all as they didnt get promoted last season. Forest unbeaten run was when they dominated the first division and won it. Hudders meant a 3rd div team went unbeaten but didnt get promoted, so what. We broke an away record without defeat last season but finished 12th was it? So what.
You had 5 minutes to come up with that reply. I would suggest you wait a little longer next time as it is bloody stupid.
You can call it stupid as long as you want, petal. But from a game with two potential outcomes, it's factually accurate.
Petal is nice. Not that way inclined but thanks. It s the fact you cant seem to grasp they had a 20 game unbeaten run but were only in the play offs after topping the league before their, oh so special unbeaten run. Hope that has simplified it for you now.
That's true, but you could also score 10 goals a game and never win. Neither of which are very likely.
The unbeaten run is 3 wins and 6 draws. That form over a season gets 77 points which is 2 points more than we got in 2008. More simple mathematics. Of course everyone is frustrated that we are dropping points in some recent games, but we also claimed points against Reading, Birmingham & Blackpool in this run which we could easily have lost. City are having a fantastic season, and i'm predicting it will go right to the last game.
Actually if the game had'nt been call off at Portsmouth and we would have won that we would have been just about in the same position in the league as we was back then. You can't blame the weather on NB FFS
you can't go assuming we'd have beaten Pompey. and the draws are relative - if we draw at Cardiff, on paper it's a positive result and a point. But the draw against Ipswich is a point also, the difference is psychological in the minds of players, fans and coach. We could have been 0-2 down come back and drawn, still only a point! I too think Cardiff will finish top 4 - always did. The other teams, us, Boro, Brighton, Blackpool, Brum and very much still in it and we are the most consistent of them. But the next game is Cardiff - I for one would be happy with a point before kick-off - as it doesn't matter if we're not top 6 now - that only matters end of season after 46 games.
Tell you what, we went on an unbeaten run in december of four consecutive wins, that form over a season is 138 points which would be just about enough to win the title. Of course, that is just bollox, just like your stat on what 3 wins and 6 draws would be over a season.
Sorry to disappoint, but I am not blaming anything on Nick Barmby, FFS! Why do people make things up?
You appear unsatisfied with the unbeaten run, so I've merely put into context, and it shows up well. Average point tally of 1.67pts/game which is play-off form. We gained points when we shouldn't have, and lost points when we shouldn't have but overall a good set of results over 9 games.
Chaz, according to the Huddersfield fans I know and what I've read, they were playing for a draw, we aren't. That to me is a difference.
The point I have consistently made since the beginning of this thread is that an unbeaten run means nothing if your competitors are doing better. I believe the vast majority of the people leaving the grounds after the draws against Brighton, Doncaster, TWS and Ipswich would have felt frustrated because they thought we should have done better. I also believe if you go and listen to Nick Barmby's post match interviews he said precisely the same thing. The originator of this thread made the point people shouldn't feel frustrated because we had been on a great unbeaten run. The pont is that in itself an unbeaten run counts for nothing.
But YOU are assuming our rivals will win all of theirs. That's something we simply have no control over. Yes the draws are frustrating, but we're drawing while trying to build and we're going for the win. We're creating chances and opportunities but not turning them into goals YET. In doing that, we're STILL on more points than we were at the same stage in the promotion season and I would argue with a more solid and consistent team. I guess some people would prefer an erratic side, fluctuating in performance rather than the solid organised displays we've been subject to. Makes little sense to me, I'm just enjoying our performances and waiting for the last bits of the jigsaw. Let's face it, this is a tight league, to be where we are given the circumstances is an achievement.
