It's really amusing how we all go to the same game yet see totally different things. Liverpool had to double up on Macca all afternoon and it weakened their midfields ability to support the strikers. Yes, teams are figuring out the young man and they are altering their game plans to accommodate our players. High praise indeed imo. Agreed he is still raw but McClean will only get better with more and more game time and imo, he is an integral part of the Mon master plan. His work rate, attitude, strength and enthusiasm is very refreshing and long may he and it remain part of the set up here.
Thanks for pointing that out. As you say I think teams know he's a threat and are marking him out the game. He hasn't had the same impact on the games of late like he did his first few. He's marked tighter. What I like about him is his old style hugging of the touchline, but still darts diagonally joining up with our forwards at every opportunity, which is part of the modern game, this is where he is a bigger threat for me. Part of Neil's counter attacking tactics.
This on so many levels. I have just said elsewhere the respect he is being shown, teams doubling up on him. Liverpool put three on him a couple of times yesterday! That's three players taken out of the game to watch one player! Of course he in't going to beat them every time, I can' think of anyone who does it every time. He is young and still learning, when he learns that laying the ball off can be just as effective as a cross sometimes, we will have an absolute star. If Bendtner had put in more effort he could have been on the end of those class crosses McCleam whipped in. A one trick pony? He has pace. He has power and strength. He has skill. He has one hell of an engine. He was also megging top class defenders and making them look very poor. He is a left footer some players can't use their right foot, to say he needs to work on his right foot is laughable. The only thing the young lad needs to work on is his decision making. He is learning all the time.

how can you say he shouldnt work on his right foot... if he could use both feet and have strength and speed he whould best the best winger in the league
im not sure.. every time he gets to a position to cross he has to cut back on to his favored foot notice the defenders showing him on to his weaker side
I can say it as it's a fact. Are you saying everyone is capable of using both feet? Sorry mate, not everyone can do that, no matter how hard they work on it. The ones that can already have some ability in both feet.
look at bobby chrlton has to kick a ball at the ball 100 times a day with his weaker foot when he joined man u and he learned to use both feet and he scored with his right foot a few weeks ago he can use it but isnt confident/can dribble with it and if somone can get him using it in preseason then he will be a better player
....................................... Sorry mate, but the OP has asked a question and people are just giving their opinion. Surely that is exactly what forums such as this are for! As for yesterday, although McClean wasn't at his best regarding creating chances etc, he was still an integral part of our victory due to his fantastic work-rate that he put in for the team.
Thanks to all who simply answered the question without going over the top & defending McLean as if I was going to assassinate him. Moved away from Sunderland recently so don't get to the games much, don't have much to go on as highlights aren't the best way to judge a player, so thought id ask people who do go. The rest can leave my throat now.
Excellently put. One point may I add is that the LAD yes as in YOUNG MAN, has never had such a high work load to do in his entire life so in the future who knows what he might achieve.
A bit before my time I thought but now I know why they call him a legend. I must watch MotD more often
