Happy to go with the idea that he needs support but a striker with pace would have had three one on ones today. Defenders were always a yard of pace ahead of him today. If the lone striker is not his game then don't play him.
I thought Fryatt had one of his better games to be fair. Seemed to be taking the game to the opposition and getting involved.
If Matty Fryatt had an extra yard or two of pace, was two or three inches taller etc...he would be playing for England
You really don't like Matty do you. The guy is our (joint) top scorer; he got a crucial goal the other night at Blackpool. Sure we're not scoring enough goals it's quite clearly proven he plays better alongside a big striker! It's ridiculous to say the lad can't finish when 2 seasons ago he scored 40 goals in a season! Give him time and the right player alongside him, we have a 20 goal a season striker on our hands and to be fair; that is still possible for this season!
Played well again today - he has to work hard and doesn't get the support he (or any other striker) needs. Another inept performance from Cameron Stewart didn't help. I agree that his slight lack of pace is a limiting factor for him but he's easily the best we've got.
Tom, I like him but as you said he needs the right player beside him and the manager is not going to play like that
If I had meant that I would have said it. More like the guy stood in the technical area or the one currently in rehab. McLean is a woeful finisher so the comparison is pointless. Compare him to lambert then tell me he is a cool calculated finisher.
If you compare the promotion season to this one, you would see Fryatt and Koren goalwise are just about matching Windass and Campbell. Both of them could easily get 14/15 by the end of the season, which is more than adequate at this level. What were missing are the other goals. Where's this years Folan? Garcia? Pedersen? Our current goal scorers are not the problem - it's the rest of the team chipping in.
Fryatt has always liked to take an extra touch and it costs him alot sometimes. I'm surprised no one has tried to get Matty to stop taking too many touches
Fryatt has been very good at this 'lone striker' thing lately. I agree that with an extra yard of pace he'd have had 3 one-on-ones today but that'd also probably see him playing in the PL as someone else said further up. However, I definitely can't agree that he is 'the best finisher we've had for a while'. His finishing is incredibly inconsistent to say the least. How many one-on-ones did he have this season before eventually scoring one against Bristol City? 10? I know there were 3 others in that game alone!
Fryatt had a good game yesterday, in the first half he was getting plenty of support from Brady and Koren, but once Brady came off and he had Stewart and Mclean either side of him the only decent balls coming in were from Koren. It's been said many times, but he's certainly not a natural lone striker and he could really do with a strike partner, but I can't see him getting one any time soon.
Matty's problem is that he is too honest. He will always try to stay on his feet even when he's being dragged back or hacked at. I'm not one for constant diving at all cos I believe it's cheating but when necessary he's got to take a tumble now and again.
