It would be nice if there could be just one single match between an English and a European team that wasn't swung in the foreign team's favour by the ref. They always find some bizarre way to have our teams lose, it's getting a bit daft.

You on drugs? Athletic dominated the game, you could even argue that Man United's penalty wasn't a penalty as the handball took place outside the box.

I haven't seen the penalty or the last part of the match in fact. It just pisses me off that things like this always happen. Look aty Arsenal 4-0 at Milan; one goal an extremely dodgy penalty and one that was blatantly offside. If those goals aren't counted Arsenal are through. The year before that they are beating Barcelona when the ref decides that Van Persie needs sending off for having a shot and they go and lose. Man Utd a couple of years ago were knocked out by Bayern Munich; another one where Man U were winning until the ref decides Rafael needs sending off for no apparent reason and they go on to lose on away goals with 10 men. Chelsea against Barca in the semi a few years ago (Man U are already in the final and the winner gets to face them) Chelsea are winning all game and are denied something like 5 good penalty shouts before Iniesta scores late on to put Barca through on away goals. Barca go on to to win the thing.

It even extends to England in national tournaments. 2010 WC we get the Lampard goal disallowed. 2006 WC we get Rooney sent off for being manhandled by about 4 Portuguese defenders and go on to lose. 2004 Euros there was another goal disallowed (Sol Campbell I think?) and we go on to lose. 1998 WC Beckham sent off for his 'reaction' to being fouled and we go on to lose. Anyone see the theme here?

You forgot to add the word 'correctly' before 'disallowed'.

I feel for Campbell, as it's happened to him twice: back in 1998 Shearer was spotted fouling when Campbell thought he'd scored, and in 2004 it was John Terry.

I thought it was a goal line thing like the Lampard one?

I can't remember much but I remember the ref was a guy called Urs Meir and he became a hate figure for a while and he might have actually resigned on the back of that decision. I remember being sure it was a perfectly good goal, even if I can't remember why.

If it's the ref I'm thinking of they retired because they were sick of getting death threats from ****s who didn't grasp the concept that he was right and were sending death threats to him and his family and he decided it wasn't worth the hassle carrying on.

I might be thinking of a different ref who retired in similar circumstances though.

That sounds familiar but I think that was some Polish guy, there's a book about it I think.

I remember being particularly aggrieved about this one, but the only detail I can remember about the actual incident was that Campbell was the scorer.

United 1 down and looking like they're going out.

You would think so, they need to score at least 3 now.
