I've known about this rule for years, I've had foulds for and against me for this, I'm sure it's regarding dangerous play i.e a boot flys off when your kicking the ball and hits someone.
Regarding Athletic Club, I watch them every week on TV and wasn't surprised that they beat United tonight, they're a top team.

I was reading up on the history of Athletic Club, they put a total emphasis on youth and local players, you can see they were playing for the shirt tonight and it put Man United overpaid prima-donnas to shame. The fans aswell were immense for them, great shots of them all waving their scarves, Old Traffords prawn sandwich brigade were well and truly silenced.

Isn't it what Black Lace renamed themselves for their comeback tour after someone complained about their name?

When did this rule come into play? I remember once George Best waltzing round several players, then stopping the ball dead, taking off his boot and passing the ball with said bootless foot. Class show boating.

Thats right, Athletic only pick players that were born or parents where born in the Basque region of Spain or France, this results in 95% of their players been Spanish though they do have a couple of none Spanish players in their squad at the moment (due to one of their parents been born in the Basque region), they also have a totally white squad which has brought up race issues before, I think they've had 1 black player in their history.

It would be quality of City picked a only Yorkshire squad, we'd struggle for some years but overall it could improve us, I remember Cardiff tried it about ten years ago but later give up the idea.

Would be nice to see some local talent given a chance, I remember a few years ago they had quotas on non-English players in Europe and it killed us for a good few years whereas the likes of Italy and Spain dominated because of their great home-grown players

The rules have changed over the years with premier league squads having to have 8 home grown players in their 25 man squads. However they just get over that rule by bringing the foreign players in whilst they are teenagers.

:1980_boogie_down: They will probably win the second leg if Evra can put his boots on right and Rafael doesnt RaFAIL again

I don't think they will beat Athletic, Athletic are very strong at home.

The ref was wrong:

Fifa Rules:

The basic compulsory equipment of a player comprises the following separate
items:
• a jersey or shirt with sleeves – if undergarments are worn, the colour of the
sleeve must be the same main colour as the sleeve of the jersey or shirt
• shorts – if undershorts or tights are worn, they must be of the same main
colour as the shorts
• stockings
• shinguards
• footwear

Infringements and sanctions
In the event of any infringement of this Law:
• play need not be stopped
• the player at fault is instructed by the referee to leave the field of play to
correct his equipment
• the player leaves the field of play when the ball next ceases to be in play,
unless he has already corrected his equipment
• any player required to leave the fi eld of play to correct his equipment
must not re-enter without the referee’s permission
• the referee checks that the player’s equipment is correct before allowing
him to re-enter the field of play
• the player is only allowed to re-enter the field of play when the ball is out
of play
A player who has been required to leave the field of play because of an
infringement of this Law and who re-enters the field of play without the
referee’s permission must be cautioned

Did you just get your refs manual out to check Bunken, knew we must have at least one of the men in black reading this forum!

I'd guess the refs discretion can override certain things though, maybe this was one instance? If i was the ref I would continue play so long as the player wasn't still trying to participate in the action after losing his boot.

He wasn't necessarily wrong. The reason it says that play doesn't need to be stopped could be to draw a distinction between this happening and the goal posts falling down.

Obviously if the goal posts fall down play has to be stopped because they're an essential part of the game.

What this rule could just as easily be saying is that if Dawson has the ball and Rosenior's boot comes off the referee doesn't need to immediately stop play. He can allow Dawson to run down the wing, pass it to Koren who shoots and scores and the goal stands, then he makes sure Rosenior has his boot back on. It's much like if a player is in an offside position he doesn't need to stop play, but if they are involved in play then he does have to stop it.

I'm glad they lost. Bilbao were by far the better team yesterday.
