I have not, like most of ye been impressed with Mereiles.

He has done some good things but I think on the whole his touch and passing is below par right now. We need an intelligent lock picker not a headless chicken running all over the place mesing up otherwise good linkup play, sometimes he gets on top of other players instead of making space, today is not one of his best days either with very poor passing yet again

I think there is room for his ilk in the team, he doesn't have the best passing ability and can't really tackle - but he is an attacking midfielder, and we need a strong CM to partner and assist him.

I think he is good, like Lucas. But we need better as a starter. Need DMF to play along with Gerrard. I also think we would realy benefit from Aqua coming back. That situation realy buggs me.

He has good parts to his game, he just seems to be a little quicker with his feet than he is in his head. We need someone that can deliver, this will not do against top opposition, without decent linkup play from him he becomes a luxury player, one in there to provide the odd goal as that is all they offer, we need to be keeping the ball as we cant afford luxury players right now. he is important in the position he plays and with Kuyt and Suarez both good in posession and clever in their movement Mereiles does not compliment those two players going forward often, we need a player to provide quality passing 30 yeards and below and the vision to see them too. Why do we almost never get goals from deft dinks over the top from 25 yards out ect, out short game is letting us down by the lack of a qiuality passer for mereiles's position, if his passing were up to scratch he wouldn't have to be so "headless chickeny":) about things

He doesn't play the short game well enough, but there is a reason why that is and its not him personally and its more to do with a lack of width. He would be more inclined to play the short ball out wide if we had wingers, but what he does do is always look for space.Okay he's not successful all the time, but I reckon he would be more successful and be more inclined to play killer short balls if we had wingers,He's incredibly bright and has decent skill.I just don't think he himself can play wide.I reckon the problem of the wide areas will be addressed in the summer. We may even see a different...or possibly even better player.I do however like him as a player and he definitely was one of Hodgsons successes if not only success.

The guy will be ok if he can see and give a simple pass in and around the 18 yard area, thats where he fails miserably. I would rather he was tring to get on the end of things, and even then his heading leaves a lot to be desired and his finishing is hit and miss, can be good and just as bad. We need a performer that can do those things week in week out, not for a few games and then disappear back into obscurity.

All in all though a good result considering. Nice clever goal by Suarez, this is the type of player anyone can do with, intelligent, sees the game at a slower pace than auld Raul. I am sure the coaches will have Mereiles working on that passing and positioning, I thought with he could tackle when he arrived, but nope, Alonso couldn't either but boy did his passing and vision make up for that. Mereiles unless he improves is a stop gap player for the moment, he better pull his socks up
