It was a marketing exercise Mary, they probably didn't make any money from the Stevenage game (but probably didn't lose any either) but they hope that they will get some payback later this season or next with higher crowds.

I agree it would have been a marketing exercise the first time, but had it not had a positive effect (financially) then I don't think we would have had a further 2 football for a fiver in the same season.

The biggest mark ups in the stadium are generated by food. More than the alcohol/drinks <ok>

Surely they can never have a negative affect financially? In basic terms it must be better to sell out for a fiver than not at all?

No mate as I explained earlier, in gate receipts terms, the club could lose £20,000 ish even with a 26,000 crowd.

What they lose on gate receipts they will more than make up for in food throughput, programme sales superstore turnover. If the cost base remains the same for the promotions and the revenue increases it will generate profit. More than that it is cash profit. We are silly if we only look at the revenue figure for these promotions. One former boss always quoted the mantra:

    Revenue is Vanity
    Profit is Sanity
    Cash is reality.

The numbers through the turnstile on promotion evenings are in reality irrelevant if the profitability has been increased for the night with more goods sold at high margins. The fact that these are paid for on th enight with cash is a blessing for any business.

Scratching - You have to take the additional logistical costs into account too - extra staff, Stewards and Policing costs <ok>

    Aren't policing costs done annually?

The likes of Portsmouth and Rangers never got into trouble through police and stewarding costs.

As SuperC says, why bother with the promotions if they do not bring in a profit? Sure, marketing is a key issue, and looking at a future fanbase is vital, but the aim of these saver-matches is to bring ready cash into the club (as SVC pointed out).
The profit of another ten thousand fans making purchases - however large or small - is going to outweigh the cost of a few extra stewards and police.

I'm sure the club would do it more often if it weren't for the ST holders getting pissed off at the reduced rates. Besides, who would want to evoke MikeT's ire on a regular basis? I wouldn't.

Yep i`m still not happy about it BUT we won the game so who cares....missed the col u match but back this saturday to see us stretch our lead as we win and the Blades lose at Brentford.
Interesting to see the attendance this saturday anything less than 16,000 will be a major disapointment to me

Sorry TC we were playing St Evenage . We only have to increase the policing and steward levels when the noisy neighbours turn up.

I`m fine thanks I had to look after MikeT junior junior....so Mike T junior went and his Mate Mike T Fulham used my season ticket.
I`m gonna miss the Yeovil home game too unfortunately though not sure wether Mike T Fulham should be allowed to go as he jinxed us Tuesday night.
BUT I`ll be there today so victory or at least a draw guaranteed.

Could have a situation of County going up and Forest going down.
