That really says it all doesn't it; and coming from somebody who obviously has a deep connection with the organization.
Bit abrupt, really. Don't think Roman would have been impressed and I wonder if it will be held against Buck some time down the line when he might be ready for a top job. Should the worst happen and Buck did leave in the near future, I would be inclined to go for Gus Poyet. The guy likes to play football, is hugely respected in the game and has decent contacts. There are far worse options out there.
I like the idea that Rodgers has been so blunt as he's got a bit too much blarney about him at times. He's absolutely right too. Even Chelsea fans will tell you that the job is poisonous right now, unless you're Mourinho. Rodgers may get a 'top job' one day but who says it's got to be Chelsea? Bit of straight talking for a change.
By the end of his contract, if he does his job, he could already be at a "Big" club .... So then why move.
A lot of people do not learn from their experiences. Glad to see that Brendan realises the grass is not always greener. If Brendan doesn't want it, I will take it up. If you're reading this Roman my buddy, I will settle for a low risk rolling year contract (will still set me up for life though!)
We're back to what the definition of a 'big club' is aren't we. Cardiff are a bigger club than us in terms of ground size but we are bigger than them in terms of stature. I have never classed Wigan or Stoke as 'big' clubs even though they have been well established for years in the Prem. Swansea, unless we double the size of our ground, fill it regularly, remain in the Prem for some years and win the title a couple of times will never be a 'big club' in most people's eyes. I'm cool with that. Personally, I'd class the 'big' clubs in the Prem as those with a massive fan base and pedigree. Man U, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. Possibly Spurs. You can debate about others. For example, some may have volume in support (Newcastle) but haven't won anything in donkeys years. 'Big' is relative, but we have a long long way to go before we get anywhere near it.
The fact of the matter is that we're now playing at the top table with some of the biggest names in club football and hopefully long will it continue. We're solvent ( how many other clubs can say that ), a good chairman, board and manager with a potential of an expanding fan base . if this what a "small club can achieve then I'm happy to be classed a "small club " and not because I don't have ambition.
On this point, i was looking around skybet earlier to put some money on tonights games (damn you West Ham!!) and came across loads of odds for the next permanent manager of different 'big' clubs...seems the bookies reckon Rodgers is in with a decent shout for any of them: Spurs - 12/1 fav 5/2 Everton - 14/1 fav is P.Neville @ 4/1 Arsenal - 16/1 fav is Guardiola @ 3/1 (but next is only @ 10/1) Liverpool - 16/1 fav is 4/1 Man C & Man U - 25/1 I know they are fairly sizeable odds but not THAT big considering the managers out there
I fancy him getting the Man U job. Suppose Swans do really well over next 3 years and qualify for Champions League and then Ferguson retires. Rodgers would be the obvious choice. Can't see why he'd want to go to Everton though - that would be a step backwards.
Buck won't move just yet. At the moment he can't lose. We are PL newbies and no one expects too much from us. Just staying up would be regarded as a triumph and BR would get lots of accolades for that. At the moment he's basking in what amounts to fairly universal admiration because of what we've achieved - and rightly so. However, should he move to one of the "big" clubs, there would be immediate expectation for results heaped on his shoulders and I suspect he doesn't want that - yet. He will move on, of course, but, at the very least, I think he wants to see how well he does with this Swansea squad in the short to medium term. I also believe that he thinks there is much more to come particularly with the addition of some quality players that our remaining in the PL should provide next season.
