but surely you only spend what you've got, all money that is borrowed has to be paid back with interest, the thatcher government of the 80's was running a surplus of £6bn in 1987, whereas now we've got a national debt of like 100% (?) despite 10 years of GDP growth.... even if you know nothing about politics or economics surely you reduce the debt in times like that?

i know we could go on all day like this but as much as some people hate the conservatives, i wonder do you condone all the debts built up by previous labour governments? and numerous other failures at that?

problem is ,the people who lived through The Thatcher years ,myself included can remember her as an uncaring cold hearted megalomaniac , who hated the working classes, and apart from the homeless debate and the miners debate wich turned the country against her ,she has also got a lot of blood on her hands when it comes to Ireland and The falklands

Politics is a dirty dishonest profession run by people out for their own gain. I hate that we do not see 100% turnouts in elections. Until there is cahnge in the turn out we will be stuck with the grubby people who are their to serve themselves and their pockets be it Labour, Liberal, Conservative etc....

Bongo, so you would prefer the Falklands and northern Ireland be handed over to the Argentinians and Eire and if so what happens to the people currently living there?

....she had a chance to organise a peaceful end to Northern Ireland not just her granted but as head of state the buck stopped with her and The falkands would never have happened if she was prepared to go into talks with Argentina but a good war stopped her being voted out of office

...i ddidnt agree with The Falklands war and DO sympathise with the people who live there but with The Falklands it dates back to The British Empire where we invaded and stole 3/4 of the world,us having claim to a group of islands a few hundred miles from the coast of Argentina is a bit like them claiming The Orkneys

The history books show that the Falklands were first colonised approximately 50 years before Argentina existed! The islands were not populated at the time the British landed and claimed the island for Britain. They were the first long term settlers, prior to that a handful of Spanish settled there but left. Yes they should talk but to invade was the wrong move by an Argentine military junta. Thatcher was right to protect the islanders, they are British. None of the Falkland islanders want to come under Argentinian rule then and nor do they now! As in 1982 the Argentines have an economic problem and there is oil within the Falkland territorial waters, now hazard a guess why it's an issue again... **** all to do with the Empire!

I'm with you Bongo, though I prefer to call them The Sebald Islands, the name given to them when the Dutch descovered them in around 1600.

I understand why Argentina want them but The U.K are no angels when it comes to ulterior motives we will have to agree to disagree on this but at the end of the day it was a needless war

Fair enough Bongo and Rhondda we all have our views but the bottom line is neither Spain nor the Dutch populated the islands and the British did long before oil was discovered. When Argentina came into it's own right as a country and borders were agreed the Falklands were outside those borders and as previously stated populated by the British.
The British government should talk to the Argentinians and come to a solution in consultation with the Falkland islanders themselves as they have the right to self determination under the UN charter.

We can't rewind the clock ,the people who at present live on the Falklands regard them selves as being part of the UK and therefore how would we expect them to accept repatriation back to the UK(if that was at all feasible) regarding NI , the two main political parties in the UK both governed during the troubles and talks with the IRA commenced in the early to mid seventies .To lay blame on one particular politician is harsh ,at the height of the troubles it was Labour who were in power when the slaughter (and thats not an extreme discription) was being carried from both sides of the political divide No I'm definately not a maggie lover , I was in my early twenties when she came to power and saw what she and her party were capable of .

As long as there is money, land power and property there will always be war. Politicians are supposed to be able to avoid war with consultation and diplomacy. Unfortunately in a democracy when people don't use their vote sub standard politicians will be elected. It is up to the all men and woman to use their vote.
I do wish the government would make it law to vote even if it means time off to go and vote. That will ensure every party would be out there and really listening to what the people say, it would also encourage the majority to research who they intend to vote for. Mind you I wouldn't use the Russian voting model :)
