"we saw some men running past the window with stones and bottles. Then they came running back with cuts on thier faces." Funny as ****!
Not that football hooliganism impresses me, but United's firms, whether it was the Red Army of the 70s and 80s or the MIB of the 90s and 00s, have always been respected amongst their peers. They were never bullied by the Turks either <whistle<
I believe they were, back in '93 or '94. That was the original clash which created so much bad blood between English and Turkish fans and led to the eventual escalation and peak at the turn of the millennium.
Turks aren't too bad, some of their atmospheres are great, just look at Galatasary, great club and fans
It didn't really kick off in '93/'94 from what I've read. You never know what to believe with these "top boy" accounts though.
Was that the same game where the Turkish cops lashed out at the Man U players as they left the pitch? Cantona got hit? Disgraceful.
I'm not sure. If by '93/94 you mean the 1993-1994 Champions League campaign then no, there weren't that much trouble. Only a few hundred United fans went over and they were outnumbered about 100-1 so didn't even get involved. We played Galatasaray again in '94/95 but I assumed that also passed without incident because it was never chronicled by the bloke I was reading. I think he only mentioned the '93 trip just because he was so stunned by the hostility of the reception, rather than anything actually happening.
Yeah, just did some searching and it was the 1993 game. Turks started invading hotels where Man U fans were staying, and over 200 Man U fans were arrested before the game. Curious that there was a near miss there in the same way that the young Leeds squad had a near miss with a plane crash in the late 90s. Very curious.
the murdering tLFC fans would take some beating after the minutes silence for some cat that got run over in Toxteth.
