Some people have claimed that 4-4-2 is old hat and that the newer formations prevent it from being effective.

I say bollox to that, no formation is better than another, it is all down to personnel.

Man U AND Spurs are both playing 4-4-2 !!!

This season we have looked best at 4-4-1-1, however Harry has seen fit to utilse 4-2-3-1 when lennon was out, and 4-4-2 against you, 2men in the middle against 3, and against one of the best possesion keeping teams in the countryaway from home.....and that fared well. England can have him. I'd love us to get a decent manager that has a winning mentality, cappello would be class.

Yeah buy you seem to be whopping Man U playing 4-4-2 even though you are unlucky to be a goal down

    generally nowadays 4-4-2 isn't 4-4-2
it's flexible so could go to 4-2-3-1, 4-1-3-2 4-3-3 etc etc

the rigid old style 2 banks of 4 style 4-4-2 is outdated.

Man U are playing a traditional 4-4-2. Spurs are missing Bale out wide otherwise they would be too.

Man Utd are playing far from a traditional 4-4-2. If you look at Rooneys position on the field he played more of an attacking midfielder than a forward. Nani and young were way more attacking than a "Traditional 4-4-2" would have them. Looked to me like a 4-2-3-1.

Didn't see them once play long balls forward, either up to the striker or into the corners. They did play the two banks of 4 though coming back. Spurs may have played 4-4-2, but I think you just got an object lesson in why the 4-4-2 is so easily countered.
