following on from an earlier thread...

(apologies in advance for not having a pound sign)

I believe a salary cap could work in the premier league however it should have been implemented years ago, and would be almost impossible to implement it now. Mainly in-part to the way players contracts are structured i.e. win bonus, goal bonus, appearance bonus etc

how i would implement a salary cap

    - cap to $32.5 million ( an ample $25,00 per player per week average)

    - only salaries paid to players who occupy the 25 man squad would count toward the cap

    - teams may violate the cap, paying a "luxury tax" of 10% on all cap overages for the first violation rising each year of continuing violation to a max of 40%

    - homegrown players and british players salaries would only have 60% of salary applied to the cap

    - each team may at the start of each season apply a "franchise" tag to any player, only 60% of salary will be applied to cap

    - players in last year of contact who have the "franchise" tag applied to them who do not sign a contract extension, will not be permitted to join another EPL team for 3 seasons

    - luxury taxes will be paid on a split basis 25% to other epl teams complying with the cap 25% to regional training centers and 50% to lower league football

    - players graduating from the regional training center's at age 16 would be required to enter into a draft, priority picks being given lowest finishing team in 2nd division rising up. Teams may trade or sell DRAFT picks

    - any remuneration for cup games, European competitions and exhibition games will not be included in cap

    - any player who is to be listed for loan will be selected in a DRAFT priority picks being given lowest finishing team in 2nd division rising up. Teams may trade or sell DRAFT picks

Thats my tuppence on a salary cap, i certainly think it would encourage british player development, encourage a more competitively contested league and help prevent teams going into administration.

    over to you

Draft wont work at all, as no ****er will know them.

Its not like the NFL, where college football is bigger and a lot of the times better than NFL, fills out 100,000 seater stadia and they are stars in the making. It just wont work over here im afraid.

And local academies are usually run by the clubs, why on earth would they spend millions on youth development, to lose every single one for 0 when they turn 16 to lower league clubs.

The American way has got advantages over ours, but they have a lot different system than we do, and their system wont work over here, or at least not anytime soon, can you imagine 100,000 watching Durham Vs Oxford univerities, or Wigan Yth Vs Newcastle Yth (its just never going to happen).

you do know that the salary cap isnt fair in amarica either <whistle> big teams are happy to go over it because the owners are rich enough and the team earns enough to pay for it

In the USA its $3mil for the season $335,000 per player.

But each team can have 2 International players (so thats us ****ed over here) and they are allowed to pay them what they like, as long as it doesnt come out of the club finances, it has to come from owner/image rights/shirt sales etc etc.

Hence why Beckham was getting $225mil for 5 years, while the rest of his American team mates were getting $335,00 a year.

    Really fare eh.

understand what your saying mate hard enough getting 20k to turn out at wigna v man city.

Regards the DRAFT, would be almost impossible to implement. The regional centre's i was thinking about would be run by the fa, independent of club influence. yeah it would discourage youth development at club's. But outside the premier league and championship (im guessing), youth development is limited.

The best players will always end up at the bigger clubs. ATM its much more cost effective to purchase european players at discount rates for smaller teams then bring on local talent

the more i think about it would love to see a Loan draft.

    Alt+156

I would also make wages results based.
Long term injuries covered by insurance to remove them from the wage bill.

I agree with sentiments of the OP, and while something needs to be done to kerb the insane sums of money in the EPL I just dont see anything happening. There is way too much money been invested by some very influential owners for them to stand by and let the league change it.

The salary cap works in a multitude of sports here in north america and it most certainly can bring parity amongst teams. I just feel football in Europe has gotten out of control financially. Its gotten some very illustrious teams in trouble over the last few years, most notably Rangers.

Not sure of a possible solution, just want to make sure my team dont fall foul of a reckless owner, not that I think Ellis would ever be reckless. But something needs to be done to bring spending under control

Not many sports franchises here are losing money.

there are way to many professional teams in the uk and the top 20-30 are just so dominant over the rest. If the current structure is to stay imo something has to be changed. If it doesn't more and more teams will begin to get into trouble and eventually fold.
