My remit for my response was more aimed at time spent playing here at the top of their game.. which really means zola could be removed.. Drogba played his best years in the league and is a beast of a player..

Agreed on Nistelrooy though <ok> knew there would be a few who i missed out.. wasnt intended to be a comprehensive list... as could add many more players if i could be arsed to think of more..

a player i will always remember from the 90's was Tony Yeboha.. remember the one season he scored three of probably the best goals the league has ever seen...

Not sure what happened with your quote appearing alongside BringBackFootie post. Even the most passionate Liverpool fans will admit Ronaldo is one of the greats of the premier league.

I know him all too well, I shared a house with a Leeds fan at the time! He scored some absolute beauties.

I think for influence and contribution for a team that had multiple successes Ronaldo has to go in as a PL great. He was at the top of his game in the premier league for as long as Drogba was. Drogba had two **** seasons leading into three really good ones and he's had two more **** ones since (or thereabouts).

Ronaldo had at least three really good seasons with us two of which were absolute blinders.

He had the potential to be the best the EPL had ever seen - but for me he wasn't here long enough to classed as the best, or even in the top 5.

    Unbelievable player though <ok>

    Alonso? <haha>

Quality player but wasn't exactly in England for too long. Same reason you cited for Ronaldo. Don't be a hypocrite now.

As a Ronaldo fan, I still don't think he's the best PL player we have had. For me, players have different statuses, there's legends, greats and fan's favourites (I may have got that from FM but it still applies <ok>). So I'd put Charlton, Best, Law, Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Schmiechel as legends. Greats include Ronaldo, Stam, Gary Neville, Robson, Edwards, Rooney, RVN, (can't ignore his scoring record), VDS etc etc, perhaps Beckham, yeah, I'd have him as a legend (possibly the category underneath that). Fans favourites probably would be the likes of Ole, Yorke, even some players that are still playing but for other teams such as Wes Brown, Louis Saha. I think the hardest to categorise are the players that are still playing for us. Rooney has the ability to be an all time legend. Time will tell on whether Nani becomes a great United player, Vidic may even have legendary status at the end of his career.

Just what I was thinking <laugh>

Agree with the sentiment if not the wording ("fan favourites" <laugh>) It all depends on what criteria you apply.

If you are looking for players who were absolutely world class but for only a short period then you're looking at players like Beckham and Ronaldo who were nominated for multiple WPOTY and Ballon D'Or award whilst playing in the PL. Or you can look at players who've been top class for ten or fifteen years like Giggs, Scholes, Tony Adams and Ashley Cole. Then there's players like Beckham, Cantona, Shearer, Lampard, Gerrard and Henry who combined elements of both of those - consistent quality play for a long period of time coupled with a season or two when they were considered amongst the best in the world. And also players who were great players coming to the end of their careers but still quality like Bergkamp, Makalele and Zola.

Difficult to say which of those combinations makes the 'greatest' player, I think it's all down to personal opinion.

    Fair comment.

Although my reply was from a direct quote from ruff, which he had Ronaldo in his list. Therefore, I was suggesting Alonso should be in it too. Completely incomparable players, however during their time in England they were both the best at what they did.

Ronaldo is the only premier league player to win the world player of the year award, so to say he doesnt deserve to be in the top 5 is plain ridiculous. Your a Liverpool fan I get it, but atleast try and look at things a little more objectively:biggrin:

Me being a Liverpool fan has nothing to do with it - you'll find I'm usually unbiased.

I did say if he stuck around long enough he could of been the best we'd seen. I also see your valid point about being world player of the year, but didn't he win diver of the year the same year (the same award Suarez or Bale will win this year!)? <ok>

Also answering a subjective question about best players objectively isn't exactly easy

Actually, by the time he won WPOTY and Ballon D'Or he'd stopped diving so much. He still went down, but usually only for genuine fouls. Of course by that point his reputation was pretty much set in stone!

And there was one other player to win the Ballon D'Or whilst playing in the PL. Yep, you've guessed it, this guy:
