Had a little bit of time on my hands and work with a West Ham fan, so put this together to show how the table would look if Pompey go bust and all the points gained against them are deducted. Pos column shows current position. Pos Played GD Points 1 Southampton 32 29 61 3 Reading 31 15 57 2 West Ham 30 17 55 4 Blackpool 31 14 54 7 Brighton 32 5 53 8 Middlesbrough 31 4 52 5 Birmingham 31 20 51 6 Cardiff 30 10 49 9 Hull 30 5 48
I have to confess to enjoying seeing them suffer but I have my fingers crossed they don't go bust. If this Rock Star guy does manage to rescue them they could be on to a winner in terms of at last being rid of the dodgy characters that heve been their last batch of owners and being owned by someone who understands the club and who may get them to at last live within their means. I like this new administrator chappie and the open way he goes about things. He has shown just how badly the club has been let down by the previous guy. It really is touch and go for them at the moment and if someone does buy them I am wondering what it is that he or she gets to buy. As it stands all I can think is they buy a franchise. PS How on earth do you find the time to spend on here when you are meant to be working hard so that the Government can continue to pay my old age pensiuon?
Things at pompey getting worse. No further parachute payments will be paid and Birch says situation worse than anyone thought.
Dont want them to go for two reasons: 1. Their "good" fans and they are historically our rivals; I like not liking them and feel it's a good part of the game. 2. Reading will gain a point on us
I mainly don't want them to go under because then clubs like Reading and Bournemouth will think we want them as rivals. Yuck.
I wonder if the Championship would stay at 23 clubs or would everyone move up a place in the league, meaning that an extra club will be promoted somewhere?
To be honest, if Pompey are liquidated, so West Ham lose points and we benefit as a result and go up as Champions, I would feel it would somehow be tarnished. *If* we were going to be Champions at the end of the season, I would rather we did it on merit and not because of someone else's misfortune - even if that someone else happens to be the Skates. It just wouldn't feel right, it would be a hollow victory.
Why would it be hollow or tarnished? The points Pompey have "earnt" this season in their 32 games have been "achieved" with a squad they can't afford. If they get expunged from the table it has no bearing on what Saints have achieved against sides that have paid their bills.
Here here absolutely spot on, all games are void that they have taken part in, we haven't played them yet but would have also had the chance to take points off them which we may now not! Tit for tat!!!
2 down to League One with 3 up. 3 down to League Two with 4 up 1 down to Conference with 2 up 3 down from Conf with 2 each up from Conf N & S 2 down from Conf S with 3 up 3 down from Southern Prem with 4 up from Midlands div and South/West div AFC Pompey in Southern League Div 1 South and West - local derbies with Gosport Borough and Sholing
How would the final result of the Championship be tarnished if Pompey's results were to be removed...?? The final table would just consist of each team's record over the 44 games played against the other 22 teams in the league. The team with the most points in those 44 games would rightfully be crowned champions. Any points gained, or lost, in games against Pompey would not be a factor.
I knew my post would get that reaction. Simply put, and I should have put it in the post to begin with, if they go bust then people will look at us and say - "You didn't earn that on merit because it took another football club, albeit a cheating one like the Skates, to go bust". Don't get me wrong, I don't feel sorry for the Skates in the slightest. Yes, the decent fans, but not the club or the more moronic sections of the fanbase. I won't be sorry if they go, nor will I celebrate either.
Quite apart from oft stated desire for Pompey to survive, it doesn't look good news for us if they don't. Currently, we are 5 points clear of third (Reading) who have a game in hand which if won would still leave them 2 points behind the auto positions. From the table which would become real if Pompey went, then we would end up 6 points clear of third (West Ham) but with them having 2 games in hand, which if won would put on level points. I know I have to take into account second as well, and points on the board are better than games in hand but still, it's not a simple case of good for us, bad for them.
Me thinks I would very quickly get over that - I want us in the premier & if it came about that way then so be it. For God,s sake lets not get sentimental - we,ve waited a long tim for this
If it ended up that we won promotion, or even the title, by the two points we dropped against Portsmouth earlier in the season, then I would understand the frustration of our competitors who did take maximum points off them, and I totally understand what LocutusOfBorg means. I think I'd get over it though
