Just seen Gary Megson sacked by Sheff Wed despite being 2points off the Autos, A win over their rivals and 3rd in the table followed hot on the heels of Lee Clark at Huddersfield, also 3rd in the League at the time What do managers have to do nowadays? Expectations are too high and managers just aren't getting a chance to do a good job anymore - even Cortese is guilty of this (to a degree, so don't slate me) What do you lot think?
Another bemusing sacking - one would have to wonder if something has happened in both cases that the public isn't to know about?
i'll agree with you on megson as it seems pointless sacking him with so little left of the season. clarke had 2 and a half seasons to get that team promoted whilst spending a lot of money in that league. cortese felt that pardew wasn't the right man and he was right so don't see what your point is.
Like i briefly said, Managers aren't given long enough to build a team sometimes and thats why I feel Cortese was guily to some extent, although it has turned out VERY WELL i must say
Lee Clark should have been sacked sooner. Massive budget, too many draws made that unbeaten record a bit of a joke. Megson, well I don't think Milan will change Weds fortunes with that decision if I'm honest. Truth is, theres better teams in L1.
The Pardew sacking was not about his ability as a manager. I was very surprised by Clark and think that was a ridiculous decision. Especially the timing, perhaps if he failed again to get autos or lose in the play offs then time to hold the hands up and say not quite good enough. As for Megson, I know he put a complaint in to the LMA because Mandric had approached another manager which pretty much sealed his fate. The trouble for Megson is that he is not a very fashionable manager. He has a pretty miserable personality and is tarnished with an image of dull football. I don't know what Sheff Wed attendances have been like, but sometimes winning football alone is not going to get the crowds in.
My first thought is "another pointless sacking". But I suppose the same things were said when we sacked Pardew. The only way Wednesday are gonna finish second is if Utd have a major collapse, so not that likely. The new manager needs to get them on a strict diet of penalty shootout practice.
i seem to remember there being a statistic that no team has been promoted after sacking their manager after january or something like that.
I think it is noteworthy that all the managers that have recently been sacked, in the Football League, have come from Yorkshire. First we had Lee Clark, then Simon Grayson got sacked, which meant he quickly moved to Huddersfield. Now we see Gary Megson sacked. I wonder what Lee Clark is going to be doing in the next few days..? Of course, Mandaric may feel that with Grayson in place, the second auto spot is out of Sheff Wed's reach, with Megson at the helm. Time will tell. I think he should have left well alone.
The problem with football now a days is that the financial situation is so finely balanced in lower league clubs that they don't have the time and patience to let a manager have a few years in a job before progress is achieved. I'm sure Mandaric will have told Megson 'we have to get promoted this year' at the start of the season. Megson naturally will have agreed. It's the same philosophy that the most successful businesses in the workd take. They need results / promotion to increase revenue to survive and to line someones pocket. I think we will continue to see more and more decisions like this throughout English football until the whole system is revamped to not just help the big clubs get bigger.
Yep, wasn't 100% on that and couldn't be bothered to look it up [blame the excellent brandy I'm drinking again this evening]. Which makes the domino effect work even better. So effectively, Clark was sacked just so that Grayson could take over. Maybe, Clark will take over at Wednesday.
My answer to this question is that you can't generalise. Each football club is run by different people, and they each run it in their own way. A lot of these people are pretty eccentric, and some seemingly lack knowledge of the game. Instead of asking questions like "what is going on in football?" which treat the entire world of football as a single entity, you should be scrutinising the boards of each club individually. They each will have their own reasons. Besides, there are still some clubs out there who show a decent degree of loyalty.
I don't know what Sheff Wed attendances have been like, but sometimes winning football alone is not going to get the crowds in. ______________________________________________________ 36,000 for the steel city derby, impressive. But, Megson is a very unlikeable character, Milans ruthless, Weds 3rd, I'm not surprised by anything in football.
Generally hate mid-season manager changes unless the team has truly quit or the manager is entirely out of his depth, but this is something else entirely. What an atrocious move...have to admit that I'll be hoping that Sheff Wed comes apart at the seams and Mandaric ends up looking like even more of an idiot.
