Hoope we are able to offload those players. Be a big test of wenger in the summer. I back him and am willing to give him the summer. But if he fails to give us an overhaul then I will lose faith. He needs to ship out the dross and buy in some quality. This summer will be key for our next 10 years.
Because if we dont strengthen then we will end up missing the champions league next year and that will mean the board will probably never invest.
No it won't. For a number of reasons. Firstly. Whilst there are a few players that we may ship out this summer, which will free up wages, it may not generate a huge income and Arsenal only make a profit to spend on transfers through player trading. We have some cash reserves for transfers, but a lot depends on whether we qualify for the Champions league. We're looking at a potential £45m loss in revenue if we don't, which will have a big impact on our ability in the transfer market. We also need to renegotiate at least one big contract - RVP's. So we're looking at a wage increase there. If we do sign someone like Podolski or better still Goezte or Hazard, we'll be looking at a £25 £30m outlay with another £20m in wages over 4-5 years. Arsenal is run on a break even basis - so in order to service this, we need to generate the income to do so. The real change in our finances and thus ability to add proper quality to our squad will come in 2014 when the stadium will be paid off and when our sponsorship deals mature and we can renegotiate a better deal. This will be when we have a big increase in revenue and as a break even club, if we're generating a good income, we can afford to spend it. This summer will not shape the next 10 years, it will shape the next 2 until the aforementioned circumstances kick in
Ok fair enough. But it is a very important summer window piskie. Because how we do the next 2 years will impact the money we get from sponsorship in 2014 or whenever all those deals (that are terrible for us) come up for renewal.
Don't forget Wenger will go end of this season, or see out 2 more years of his contract - then a new manager.
I agree it's important this summer We do need to add some quality to the squad and ship out some players too. But we need to remember that CL qualification is key to us being able to spend. We may have a cash surplus, but this will be used to service wages and costs, so we really need the £45m income from the CL to be able to be effective in the transfer window. I think we need to sell a few players, primarily to get the wage bill down (or use it to reward our best players) and to generate some income to reinvest in the squad. We do have some money already for transfers, so we can invest in the squad. But I don't think we should expect a massive overhaul. I think we need to add 1-2 real quality players. A replacement for Fabregas and another striker are priorities. If we do this, and ship out a few at the same time, then I'd be satisfied that we'd done good business. But the importance of CL qualification cannot be overstated
Correct. Its critical we sign a world class playmaker (or as good as we can find) to replace cesc and you are correct...someone like podolski who can play up front and wide. Obviously we also need to resign rvp. But I think that will only be possible if he sees us buy a playmaker. I also think we need a full back who can start at right or left back. But I am most worried, as you touch on, about shipping out the deadwood. I am hoping wenger can finish the job he started last summer and get the players who arent good enough off the books. Nowadays wages matter more than transfers
We still need to ensure that we get good value for any players that we sell - rather than simply ship them out for peanuts to reduce the wage bill. That's not good business sense. We might want to look to save (or reinvest) £5-£10m per year in wages, but it wouldn't make any sense to give up the same amount in transfer fees whilst doing so.
Disagree. We need to make good business decisions. If that means selling someone like denilson for free to get £40-50k a week off the books then we should do it. There is no sense in keeping these players when they are never going to play. Getting no return for 50k a week makes no sense. Better to ship them out for free.
But this isn't a good business decision. Shipping out a player who's worth £5m for free, simply to save £2.5m on wages makes no sense. Essentially you are giving away £2.5m
You both have good points, buy a player is only worth what someone is willing to pay for him, I personally think that with some of the dead wood, we should reduce our price, that we will still get some money in the form of transfer fees, and also save on wages.
Agree We may need to take a reduced price, especially as the players will not exactly be in the shop window. Also the fact that they've been on higher than average wages may mean that the buying club will offer less all round. But I think simply giving them away makes no sense as the money we'd save in wages, we could get in transfer fees.
I think the players will sit it out on the high wages they have (thank you Wenger), and not accept lower with another club. Then when out of contract they can negotiate better.
Of course if you can get xfer fees then we should. But we shouldnt hold out for more and then not sell the big wage clowns who aren't going to contribute anything to the first team. The money men shouldnt hold out for transfer fees. Better to get things sorted early. Sell up and get what we can (it wont be the max because we need to get it done early in the window) so we can then sign some players and then resign rvp to a new deal.
When have we ever held out for a big transfer fee ? If anything we've probably undersold our players in the past. As for those we do want to sell, I'm not sure they will play hardball on wages (sitting it out and not playing football, simply to rake in the wages) I think their first priority will be to play first team football and if it's made clear that they are not in Wenger's plans, then I'd hope that they would want to move on. Accepting a lower wage, may well be a compromise that they'll have to make. I do agree that we may have to take a cut in the transfer fee for these players, but I don't think we should ship them out for free.
Not a big fan of talksport but this is pretty interesting... www.talksport.co.uk/radio/andy-gold...ak-could-be-attempt-flush-out-russian-bidders
Nasri we held out for more rather than just shipping him out early in the window. Sure it made us some money but it also has contributed to ruining our season. Same with cesc. It was obvious he was leaving so we should of just got the deal done early in the window. Obviously this is all guess work but I think there is enoguh evidence out there that we held out for money and hence ruined our season.
