Been reading comments on other threads. Think this one is getting to the point where it merits a specific discussion. There seems to be a developing view that DG is our weak link and certainly won't be up to it if we get promoted (you will note that I just can't bring myself to say "when" just yet). A few weeks ago the view seemed to be that he needed a kick up the bum but I sense that it is now hardening. The two guys behind me on Saturday criticised him relentlessley to the point of irrationality. I have always been a fan. During our bad spell I have been of the view that DG, for all his frustrations, has been our most potent attacking threat and there are at least two high quality crosses in each game that are potential matchwinners. I have, however, grown more frustrated by his unwillingness to commit to 50/50 tackles and the odd bad bit of deision making - shooting from 35 yards when Solly has burst his buns to get outside him as a regular example. But I remain firmly of the view that, for all the frustrations, DG is a good thing and a reason why I am prepared to part on a regular basis with my hard-earned( to be entertained rather than watch hoof ball). I was brought up on a diet of wingers - Davie Provan (that's for you FHB!), Johnny Doyle, Willie Mogkan, Wee Jinkie, Davie Cooper, Gordon Hill, Steve Coppell etc and whilst DG cannot really be mentioned in the same breath, I do perk up a bit when his name is on the teamsheet in a way that I just don't with Waggy or Pritchard, Discuss.
I'd hesitate to criticise him too much, his crossing is immense and its great to have a long-throw expert amongst our ranks, even if they haven't been quite so effective. Hearing the views of Daggers fans pre-season (as many of us did), we were all expecting an inconsistent performer and that's what we have. He goes anonymous in a lot of games (though very few wingers at this level do not), and his chickening out of challenges drives me crazy, but those occasional moments of brilliance make me realise how special a player he is. Also, as frustrating as it can be, I don't mind him shooting from a distance when other options are available, as most of the time he catches the opposition unawares (as they expect him to go for the 'other option' of laying it off to Solly). Not to mention, he has a decent goalscoring record for a midfielder so its not a bad idea for him to shoot every now and again. That said, bringing someone in to compete with him for a starting place may be a good idea (its with a heavy heart that I resign myself to the fact that, for the time being at least, Scott Wagstaff isn't good enough for our first team).
I`m not his biggest fan but he`s stil very young learning the game and will only get better I`d stick with him next season .
It's strange you do forget how young he is, only a year or so on Waggy. I've never understood the love for Waggy, he is awful and isn't even a Charlton fan (the homegrown thing seems to be the only reason why you might perhaps like him)
He told me he wasn't seeing anyone else, that I was the only one for him As for Waggy, he isn't a Charlton fan no, but I guess the love for him comes from a desire to see our academy players make it in the game. He has been poor this season though, and wasn't great last season either. I feel if anything over the past two years he's going down in ability and losing confidence as well. Whenever he featured in our first League One season, he used to love going past the full back, yet he never does so now. Its a shame too as his pace can cause real problems. Perhaps his future lies in playing up front (considering his inability to cross), but if so, it won't be at this club, not with the likes of BWP, Kermit, Haynes etc anyway.
Danny Green is a player of amasing potetial, to night I saw about 75% of what I think he is capable of. He was a diffrent class to anything Chesterfield had. Will he ever reach the level that his talent would allow, i honestly doubt it. I don't think he knows how good he could be. Easiley good enough for the Champ if he works on his weaknesses, as mentioned he is still young enough to do that. Waggy on the other hand is a basket case as far as I am concerned, happy to have him as 2nd choice in League 1 but nowhere near good enough for the Champ. Hasn't improved in the 4 years he has been involved with the first team and time is fast running out! Powell doesn't give players he knows can't do what he wants much house room and the selction of 1st Pritchard and now Haynes over him tells me his time is up.
I think Green has great potential, and is the best crosser of a ball at this club. I don't think we have seen his best this season, he blows hot and cold, but he does have the talent. Reckon we will get more out of him the longer he stays with us. Reckon he can easily cut it in the Championship, if we get there !!!
