SUNDERLANDâS key player this weekend is undoubtedly Lee Cattermole. I was so glad he didnât pick up a booking on Saturday against West Brom because he could be Sunderlandâs inspiration this Sunday. For me, the crucial battle will be between him and Cheik Tiote for control of the centre of the park. I rate Tiote and I believe the duel between those two could be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the game. Cattermole has produced much more mature performances under Martin OâNeill and has been man-of-the-match in the last two games at least. How he performs on Sunday will be very important. He needs to produce his best and most disciplined performance this weekend and he needs to lead by example â get an early booking in a game like that and it can be a nightmare for the remainder of the game. Martin OâNeill mentioned the other week that in his view, Cattermole couldnât have been too far away from coming into contention for Stuart Pearceâs England selection. If Cattermole is able to influence and even dictate some of the game on Sunday, Sunderland will have a real chance. H It was fantastic news for Fraizer Campbell and for Sunderland that he was called up into the senior England squad for tomorrowâs game against Holland at Wembley. The selection came completely out of the blue and Iâm sure that even Sunderland fans would not have expected it. Itâs remarkable to think that of the five England strikers selected, three of them have Sunderland connections. Even more remarkable that at one point Danny Welbeck, Darren Bent and Fraizer Campbell were set to form three of Sunderlandâs four strikers for the season! Iâm absolutely made up for Fraizer because he comes across as such a down-to-earth nice guy and after what he has been through, he deserves every bit of good luck he can get. Serious injuries are the bane of a footballerâs life. The worst thing. A really bad one really brings you down. And for Fraizer to come through two consecutive ones and bounce back the way he has is a great credit to his character. It will be a proud moment for him, his family and for Sunderland and its fans if we get to see him on the Wembley turf tomorrow with the Three Lions on his shirt.
Tiote bosses any midfield, highly doubt we'll keep hold of him. He's a more skilful and smarter player than Cattermole and is rarely out muscled to the ball. Cattermole is a thug in these kind of games, never manages to keep his cool. He's the same as Bardsley, so it's good for you that he's injured as he'll be close to going off again. I fully believe we have a better midfield and would like to see a diamond shape, Tiote will have to drop slightly deeper.
Sorry Syd, just never rated Cattermole. You watch him more than me obviously so you can prove me wrong but he does seem to lose his head in games like these, but I feel I know enough about him to know that Tiote is a much better player.
he is a far better player under MON, seems to have controlled his temper, well unless its a parked car in Newcastle
I do fear their midfield, but I think it depends which Catts turns up. If its the one that has been superb recently and run the midfield we will be fine, if its the brainless thug we will be screwed. I have a feeling MON will go cautious and play Catts and Colback from the start with Gardner coming on if we need a goal. We must play Campbell in this game if he is fit, as we miss his pace and work rate up top when its Sess on his own. I was confident until the weekend, now I am very worried about the game.
Lee Cattermole says Sunderland will draw on their recent successes as they look to bounce back from the defeat at West Brom. The Black Cats' skipper was amongst the pick of his side's performers at The Hawthorns as Martin O'Neill's side suffered just their fourth league defeat under Martin O'Neill. Cattermole is training with a reduced squad at the Academy of Light this week due to international commitments, with a host of players jetting off to meet up with their respective national teams after the defeat in the Midlands. The tigerish midfielder says the team remain on track and insists his squad have what it takes to pick up their excellent form once more. "Confidence is still high," he said. "When the manager took over, if he could have been put in this position with everything as it is then I'm sure he would be very happy. "We're in the quarter finals of the cup and are still aiming for the top half of the table. I don't think we'll be too far away . "There's a few lads on international duty and they will get a buzz meeting lads from other teams and hopefully bring that spirit back into our camp. "Then we'll approach the Newcastle game." Cattermole added: "To go from the high of beating Arsenal in the cup to going [to West Brom] and putting on a poor show just isn't like us. "We're disappointed but we will come back from it."
I honestly think we will go to a five man midfield to combat Newcastle. Apparently Vaughan will be fit so picking this Sunderland side will be tough. I can't see O'Neill going for it until the second half and I think we will invite pressure. He will need every player to perform for this to come off.
