Grant Holt: no. too slow, too cumbersome, too many players ahead in the pecking order. Will be 33 by the World Cup. John Ruddy: yes. Second best English keeper at this moment and only 25. Surely way ahead of Green and Carson. End.
why put it to bed? we all want holt to get the rewards he deserves for what hes doing for our club, and think he'd do a job for England. Others agree too, and keeping the discussion public is only going to improve the odds of it maybe happening some day.
<trying not to bite> Holt is not too slow or cumbersome, just ask Ferdinand. Most of us recognise he's not the perfect age for an England call up but if you pick the team on form, then he (or Graham) should be in the squad. If I thought England were really "building for the future" then I'd understand the age thing but frankly I don't believe they will. We'll see the same old has-beens picked on reputation by the time the Euro's roll around.
What I want to know.... why are England always building for the future? Why not pick in-form players, who will be around in 2 or three years time. Players and men generally of Holt's build mature later and so why now, worth a chance.... not as if we have anyone else scoring many more then him at the moment!
Oh look a jealous town fan with nothing better to do than come on our board and slag off our players. Did making this topic make you feel better about yourself?
So we're not allowed to have a bit of fun, not allowed to point out he's an in form ENGLISH forward, not allowed to speculate about it? Suck the life and joy out of anything else lately? Bet you're real fun at parties!
The fact is you don't like grant holt because he done you. He thrashEd the **** out of Ipswich and you console yourself by telling yourself he was just a lower league "chancer" that got lucky against the "MIGHTY IPSWICH TOWN" The real fact of the matter is of course he's an excellent footballer, scores goals regardless of opposition, and more than worthy of playing in the premier league. Grant holt has not got where he is by accident, he took the long way round but it's made him the genius he is.
i'll bite yorkie. can i just ask why the world cup is important in this debate? i can't speak for everyone else but my gripe is that holt has not been called up for this friendly match versus holland. i'm not suggesting he should go to the euro's, i'm not saying he should go to the world cup, i'm saying he is the most in-form centre forward today who is fit in the premier league, yet he is overlooked for a friendly despite the lack of alternatives who are better than him. there are only three strikers in the current squad - welbeck, who based on sunday is hopeless (though i accept he isn't and has a good future), sturridge who hasn't played up front all season and campbell who has played three games in 14 months but hasn't played 90 minutes in even longer. there is no logical reason for holt to be excluded from this friendly squad. none whatsoever. meanwhile, ruddy's omission is the most dumbass decision made by an england manager since the last squad was selected when he should have been picked too. i have literally no confidence in pearce and had no confidence in capello to actually pick the best players rather that the players who cost the most for their clubs. nothing has changed...
also, holt is neither slow nor cumbersome. it seems your perception of holt is tarred by an incorrect and lazy media rather than what he is actually capable of. on twitter, people are claiming that man utd and chelsea fans were calling for holt to get the nod on talksport (i don't listen to it so can't confirm if true). thats fans of two of the best teams in europe who think he should be in the england squad. they rate him, why can't you? oh yes, thats right... you hate him
They even (talksport) had a debate on the squad selection and there main talking point was why holt and graham werent called up!? The majority agreed so that was probably from that.
i'll also say that holt has improved by playing with better players around him. so maybe there is no point playing with the utter crap england have in their squad...
i think Graham is a good shout as he is younger. if you look at past experience, a swansea or Norwich player is very unlikely to get picked!
How old is graham btw? On Alan Brazil show he said we might aswell cross off holt, graham and lambert cause of there age!
i wouldn't have a problem if graham got the nod ahead of holt, although i personally feel they should both be called up to add options. i just want to see some players from the so-called lesser clubs who deserve a chance through hard work, consistency and no lack of talent get a chance
thats weird and shows a total lack of knowledge - perhaps unsurprising of alan brazil! danny graham is 26 i believe holt is only 30 anyway - generally acknowledged to be the prime period of a centre forwards career! he should know that!! zamora and davies were both older when they got their first caps, heskey was still getting picked in his 30's. surely its more to do with what england needs for a competition they are about to participate in than two or even four years down the line. getting the youth in is great - we need to - but which other youngsters are potentially capable of international football except for oxlade-chamberlain?
It,s not always that you play for a lesser club. Why did Stevie Bruce never get picked If your face don't fit!!!!!!!!!!!!
