    While the Irwell could be classed as a river, it's a lowly tributary to the great Mersey, or what is it they call it the Manchester Ship Canal? More like the "Manchester's inferiority complex over Liverpool being the biggest port in the world"

    Actually, it is a river in its own right and runs into the Mersey.

    The ship canal merely adds to your ingrained persecution complex. <ok>

    All I can say is, he must be rubbing his hands in glee, that you've ranted on about it for 3 pages, he has you on his line and is reeling you in. Just PM a mod and stop giving him such a reaction. If he had friends he'd be high fiving them now.

    "A tributary or affluent is a stream or river that flows into a main stem (or parent) river or a lake. A tributary does not flow directly into a sea or ocean."

    The OED begs to differ! There's that inferiority complex rearing it's butt ugly head again....

    Still a river. It is indeed a tributary but it has its own source.

    Inferior to a naturally formed river which its colony has made zero contribution to forming, merely feeding off it like leeches? Not when there's a superb feat of engineering with which you can bypass minion population to go straight to the heart of the industrial revolution.

    <ok>

    Which bits? The bits that evapourate and fall as rain into the lake district from where they find their way to Manchester? <ok>

    It would be pushing it to say that it went straight from North Wales, bypassing Liverpool and the surrounding area, into the Manchester water supply.

    <doh> taffy boy was arguing that is was NOT a tributary, I was arguing it was, the fact that is is also a river is not in question. I never once said it was never a river! ;)

    Now please Swarbs, leave the intellectual arguments to the educated people, you stick to smearing your own faeces on your monitor. :emoticon-0172-mooni
