So how do we all feel after watching that final? The sentiment that poor old Liverpool had waited so long for trophy went past me a bit. I mean, six years - what a nightmare. The last thing they won was the FA Cup the year after winning the European Cup, Poor little darlings. How did they and their fans cope with such little success? Do me a favour. Cardiff played well, and of course Liverpool didn't (no credit to the "little team" for stopping them from playing so no change there.) But a big point for me was the difference between Championship and Premiership was shown not to be the gulf it was when, for example, Millwall were completely rolled over by United. If we go up our squad will compete, I believe.
I did get a tad annoyed when one commentator said that this is great for the fans who have had to support Liverpool through thick and thin!! What Liverpool fans having it hard... seriously
Is it just me, or is Liverpool's squad, for the hundreds of millions spent creating it, actually rather average???
Not just Liverpool. They are infatuated with the teams at the top. It's good PR for them. After all, who cares for any team outside of the Premier League..? Hang on, let's narrow that down - who cares for any team outside the top six of the Premier League..? Well actually, the vast majority of football fans, that's who. We may not care for individuals teams, but we damn well care more about our team than any top six team. Add us all up and we are clearly being misrepresented by the media, The Football League Show apart, that is.
I think, SS, that the sad truth might be actually this. If you add up all the fans of the top clubs, those that go and those that don't, you will probably find that these clubs, let's say Man U & Citeh, Chels, Arse, Liverpool and Spuds, have more supporters put together, than all the fans of all the other teams in the English football leagues, put together. It might be close, but I think these 6 clubs probably account for 50%+ of football fans and all that goes with it.
PM, I'm not a mile away from the sentiment in which I posted. Somewhere, someone did a count up of fans, and the combined Football League had more stadium attending fans than the Premier League. As far as I'm concerned, that's all that counts. Armchair fans are ok in their own way, as they have many and varied reasons why can't be at the stadium themselves [crikey I'm one of those], but fans who commit to the cause are the real ones to count. I believe the numbers are in the Football League's favour. However, the headlines are not.
When I saw the title of the thread, I thought it was about relief that Liverpool have won a trophy and that king kenny can continue his reign for another six years. That way there won't be a vacancy at anfield that attracts a brilliant Liverpool supporting manager! And only NC knows where we'll be in 6 years
Enjoyed the game and realised during the penalty shoot out that I slightly preferred Liverpool to win, but there was no great gulf between the two sides. Liverpool are having a middling season (for them) whereas Cardiff have had three good years in the Championship, so I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise. The success of Swansea and Norwich also show that the gulf isn't that big, providing you are an organised side. However, the Spurs/Arsenal game was the best on offer on Sunday.
I totally agree, but armchair fans have a TV in their/our collective mushes, so there's the rub. Sad ain't it? I was talking to a Gridiron fan in Tampa recently, and they rarely see their local team as the stadium doesn't sell out often. Enter stage right....
Yes it is. IIRC, there was an owner of an Italian football club; maybe Juventus, maybe one of the Milans, who said that he could see a time when they would have to bus fairly disinterested people in off the street to make up the vast majority of the crowd, to give an atmosphere to a game while the armchair fans at home waved their scarves and banners. Frankly, I don't think we're a million miles away from that stark prediction, which was made in a country where being a passionate fan is on another scale altogether different from the UK.
That's very true. I was watching the Liverpool game yesterday and the BBC coverage was more than a little biased towards them and, to my mind, incredibly patronising towards Cardiff. Fans of the clubs outside the top half of the PL are disenfranchised by the national media.
Poor poor Liverpool. Their fans have had to go through so so much, what with being in the top half of the premiership year after year. They have really had it hard not winning anything for a massive 6 years and they really deserve it... I know when you have won as much as Liverpool, you expect to win things. But give me a break, they have not been through a lot and 6 years is nothing. Also slightly annoyed me that Shearer was saying that he thinks Cardiff deserve to get promoted because they didn't win the cup. I have nothing against Cardiff, but sorry, they did really well throughout the cup and were unlucky not to win the cup. But the league is completely separate, just because you loose in a final doesn't mean you automatically deserve to get promoted. That just sounds like the cop out that is the Champions league drop outs into the Europa league. Anyway I digress, I was supposed to be being sarcastic about Liverpool's hardships and I've gone off on a bit of a tangent....I love Rickie Lambert
Over the last couple of weeks I've had the misfortune of having to listen to Talksport every day. OK, you can put up with it, but I'd seriously prefer something else, or even silence. Preferences apart, I was staggered by the coverage that the top six Premier League clubs get from this station. Even more so the London based ones. In fact, even eager listeners noticed this and wrote in saying there is too much talk about Arsenal. So what did the station do..? Actually started doing a spot called something like, The Daily Arsenal Talk, where they witter on about which player has a cough or runny nose - basically, it's utter tripe. Once in a blue moon they talked about Fulham, or Stoke, or any of the other cannon fodder of the PL. I even heard Nigel Adkins name mentioned once in connection with the Wolves job. Oh hooray [he shouted sarcastically]..! They really ought to rename Talksport as TalkPremierLeagueTopSix and be honest about it. Sport hardly gets a look in.
