This is funny. For all our optimism to be beaten at home by the top teams when we do not score many is expected. For us to claim an off-day would be even more funny except we generally play like we did today against teams like Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough United.

Only time I have missed any part of a Saints game this season (either live or on the radio) was after listening to the first half of Brighton versus Saints at the AMEX. Listened to the first half, 0-0, and went off to start my shift at work. Checked the score on my phone during my break, only to see: Brighton & Hove Albion 3 - 0 Southampton FT.

The crushing feeling of disappointment was hard to describe.

Then why claim an off-day, instead of accepting you're just an average Championship side.

We are an average Championship club. We also had an off day (but today certainly wasn't our worst performance or even our worst home performance).

Fair enough, but pretty much every team we beat "has an off day"...

Laughable. Probably spent far more supporting my team in the past 10 years than you have mate. Season ticket holder until 2010/11, bought individual tickets since. Don't call me a glory hunter, thanks <ok>

I wonder how much I have spent over the few years I have been watching?

Rather a lot I suspect, but then cost is secondary to being there.

If you were beating average teams 3-0 away as a matter of course, you would already be absolute certainties for the title.

We have made it more difficult for ourselves by losing a few games we should have won, but the fact is that it is now the end of February and we have never been lower than second, were top for 4 months, are the top goalscorers, have a good goal difference, and, on our day, play the best passing football in the league. This is not by chance.

So how much do you spend to get to a home match I wonder?

I agree with all of this. But that's what sets apart top Championship teams that go up, and Premier League teams that just happen to be playing in the Championship. I'm not trying to imply that you wouldn't survive if you went up. But while you're one of the best sides in the division, you're not a class apart in the way that Newcastle were a couple of years back, or Reading were the season we went up.
