Wonderful song to chill out to - especially since its Miles Davis' version... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsp5OASh7bg
Glad you finally got to hear the jazz piano gold, and that you enjoyed it Gandy. Despite my 'knowledge?' in 'classical music' (I really hate that term, especially as the classical period only lasted about 50 years, as I'm sure RBF will confirm), and all the great composers. Only 1 composer does it for me every time and that's Wagner. I know he wasn't the nicest of people (slight understatement there), but for me, his music is so powerful. Dave. Do you like the old blues as well? Muddy Waters, BB King, Cab Cable etc?
Cracking tune. Somewhere I've got a recording of Ian Bousefield - principal trombonist with the Vienna Phil playing that. Just recently I've been going through a phase of listening to Maurice Murphy, a great trumpet player (I think RBF may have played with him) Got a cracking recording of him playing Georgia and Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue.
The classical period only lasted 50 years? You see how dumb I am? I thought everything with a violin was classical! I just remember hearing Jacqueline du Pré playing Elgar's Cello Concerto - that was when I realised there was more to music than the Kinks.
Glad you like it Someone who could really make the Sax sing - John Coltrane http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=w62Nr2r8PQE&NR=1
I think it was Sir Thomas Beecham that said to her, "In between your legs, you have one of the most beautiful instruments known to man, and all you can do is scratch the bloody thing!" Her playing that concerto is so full of passion. She really did know how to bring the notes to life.
Remember Tom Jones singing 'Delilah'? Yeah ****, wasn't it? This was better....
Sorry lads, I had to go to bed in the middle of all that! Maestro, yes I love all the old blues, those blokes (and the odd lass) knew all about improvisation, I also like a lot of the more modern stuff, a la John Lee Hooker etc. As for jazz, I like a lot of the Dixieland, foot-tapping stuff, and as I said much earlier, I just love to hear ANY instrument played well! Patrick Moore playing Rondo a la Turk on the xylophone anyone???
I was and still am fond of "white mans" blues. Not the guys trying to copy it but guys who mixed their upbringing with the chords of black mans blues. The late great Stevie Ray Vaughan was a favourite of mine and was a virtuoso player and just put his slant on slightly Jazz oriented blues. Of the British bands. Keef Hartley was my favourite with his cosmopolitan line up that quite often had a tremendous brass section.
This is what I am listening to at the moment....
Now there's a blast from the past Zogean. Have you got their album 'Difficult To Cure'? Not too sure if Beethoven would appreciate their version of his 9th, but I loved it
I have listened to the album, but a while ago I don't have it in Australia. My dad has it.... Rainbow always did good covers..... as well as the music!
Complete change of style now. Would be interested to hear some of your comments on the following......or maybe not 2 pieces of music I will never tire of hearing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyb39zUqeq0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktt7CJ18_4Y&feature=fvst If you need to turn up the volume at the beginning of the 2nd link, you will need to turn it back down at the end. There is a fair bit of power there, and its not made electronically either
Ireland is alive with great music right now. Altho I think The Villagers are from Dublin, I'm told that Belfast is the first city to feel like it has a genuine "scene" since Manchester and Brighton in the 90s....
