I have been reading this in the news, today. How is that going to work? Imagine you're the new manager at United, going in under Fergie's shadow, what chance have you got? I think United can kiss goodbye to any chance they thought they may have had of Mourhino going in as their next manager, not with Fergie always looking over his shoulder. That could never work. No manager worth his salt would put up with any interference from outside the dressing room - and there is absolutely no way SAF would not be poking his nose into the manager's business, every five minutes. Fergie remaining at the club would not be the same as, say, Bobby Charlton being at the club, because Charlton never had any pretensions about being the manager, and he was quite content to leave all of that to Fergie. Does anyone, in their right mind, truly believe that Fergie would keep his nose out of a new manager's business, especially if United fall outside the top 4 - which is quite possible they will? I very much doubt it.
Yep, I'd have to agree with you completely there, HIAG. Once he's stepped down as their manager he should leave completely or the next manager has no chance.
Whoever takes over is always going to be compared to him, anyway. Just as all Utd managers before him were compared (always unfavourably) with Matt Busby. It would take a very strong character indeed to resist his influence.
His shadow will fall over whoever is the next manager whether he is there or not. They had the same problem after Busby as Leeds did after Revie. Probably the best solution is to groom a new manager from amongst the players/former players who will understand the Fergie way. Rather like Mackay followed Clough with some success at Derby. Whatever happens you can be sure that when SAF retires it will be a very, very difficult task to replace him and continue the kind of success he has brought them. So I don't think it matters if he is there as an ambassador or not.
Managerial appointments are an art, not a science, Lidls. You can make an extremely sensible choice that just doesn't work out.
"If you think a club as well run as Utd is going to allow the wheels to come off because the manager changes, you'll be sadly disappointed." Says llittleDinosaurLuke Busby retired in 1969 by 1975 Man U. were relegated. From Champions to 2nd division is a short hop, ask Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Derby County.
You think so? we'll see. Have a look at Liverpool atm. Man U may not crash out of the PL like they did before, but mid table is easy to see. I have a feeling it will not be the cake walk that you suggest when they have to employ a new man.
Given Ferguson's longevity, perhaps Lidls has forgotten the turmoil a new manager can bring to a club?
If I remember correctly, Fergie was one game away from being sacked, some few months after first taking over.
The difference in England is that contrary to the SKY4 doctrine there are always 6 or 7 clubs within sight of the top and all are capable in the right circumstances of mounting a challenge. We can see this season the struggle Arsenal, Chelsea, & Liverpool are having to maintain their status as in walk Spurs, Man C. and NUFC. Then there is Villa & Everton who although not challenging atm who knows what will happen in 2 or 3 years time. Did anybody forecast the sudden rise of City! As long as all this money washes around the PL it will become harder and harder to maintain a top spot.
I thought last season we were number 3 in the league and put up a post saying that we had underachieved and should have finished 3rd. So I did!
I can just see Fergie insisting on being buried at the halfway line on United's pitch. A small tombstone can be put there and the ball can be placed there prior to kickoff. Failing that, the stone can be put near the goalmouth.Bent will like that for his in offs!!!!
This, of course, is why I am universally despised by fans of our desperate rivals, as being nothing more than a conceited wum. Being right is not a simple gift. Sometimes, it can be a curse. Then again, look at 'Pool. How cursed must the average Mouser be to believe that Queen Kenny, a donkey, and an extra out of Mississippi's Burning is going to bring the glory days back to Klanfield? The poor, poor bastards!
Personally, HIAG, think that Suarez is a very talented, dangerous striker. Unfortunately, his demeanour leaves quite a bit to be desired. Maybe that's why we didn't pursue our interest in him last summer?
Fergie to stay on.....how comforting to know the new man will have the Grim Reaper standing over him.
