In my opinion the thread asking for the best looking car doesn't tell us much. Everyone agrees that stepped noses are hideous, and McLaren's margin would have been even greater were it not for anonymity, fans blindly voting for their own teams, and an Argos catalogue sized image of what is believed to be the Hispania F112.

A more interesting debate is which of the stepped nose designs look least bad. For me it's the Caterham. The front end isn't radically different to other designs, Force India in particular. But a dark, plain colour scheme helps make Caterham's tip look a little less of an afterthought than some other cars. I'll give an honourable mention to Red Bull, as while I don't like the tip of their nose, they have done the best job in making the step look less ugly.

Sorry to the mods for being a bit similar to another thread, but it is pre-season and I've explained why I think this is a more relevant question.

Out of all the stepped noses I think the Lotus' is easily the best of the worst. The Mercedes is the worst but all of them are pretty fugly and I really hope they change the regs for next season to get rid of them.

The darker colours seem to hide the nose bump better. Lotus probably get the nod in my view.

I saw the RB8 from a different angle today, and went right off it, it looks like something that has been broken and glued back together in a hurry, even the racing stripes look all ****ed up, and if your racing stripes look pants, well....

I keep getting Caterham and Lotus mixed up, anyone else?

I must admit I was perplexed as to why, on the other thread, most people were praising the looks of the RB8's hump in comparison with others. For me it's one of the ugliest implementations and its only saving grace is that it apparently does something functional, other than just satisfying the new regulations. Basic though Ferrari's hump is, I actually prefer it on looks alone to Red Bull's - not that I understand why it's such a slab.

I think the nicest looking hump is probably the Lotus. Caterham's, they being the first to reveal, was so much of a shock to me that I haven't been able to bring myself to look upon it again.

    Lotus by a nose.
I also think that the Caterham is one of the better jobs but being first on the scene this year only served as a sedative for what followed…

That said, HRT have come pretty close.

RB8 is one of the worst noses, as is the Mercedes. Ferrari is also quite bad at launch but doesn't look as bad in the pictures.

Voted Caterham (explained in the other thread)

That's one of the pics tomcat posted on the RB8 thread. Are they an artist's rendition or an actual photo? TBH I liked the way it looked in those pictures - not the hump/windsock so much but the nose section. It doesn't look as good on the track.

Montoya Blasts F1 'Joke': Juan Pablo Montoya has aimed fire at Formula One, blasting the look of this year's cars and insisting he does not regret walking away. The winner of seven Grands Prix left McLaren in the midst of the 2006 season, switching immediately to NASCAR. Still in America's premier motor racing category and a few pounds heavier than in his F1 days, the now 36-year-old Colombian was asked if he has ever regretted the move. "Not for a second," he is quoted by Switzerland's Motorsport Aktuell. "Of course I have some fond memories of Formula One, but I don't miss it. I miss some of the people I met there. But the racing? Not at all." Montoya admits he still watches some races, but has "very little interest" overall. "F1 is a joke," he blasted. "It's sad they can build cars like that — just look at the new noses."

Yeah but when was the last time a Formula 1 driver got to drive his car into the back of the fire truck?

Black liveries always make the car look better, thats why the lotus nose works. 2nd place for me is the FI, that car looks mean and fast

Sadly the poll doesn't include HRT. I'd vote for that.

I saw this post from Kyle

Assumed that it probably was the HRT F112, and at that point went ahead with the poll.

I went to a kit car show years ago and amongst the established manufacturers were independent designers who had made their own kits and were looking for funding or orders so they could develop and produce the kits. One was an attempt at a road legal F1 car replica. Unfortunately it didn't at the time look much like an F1 car, however, it's attempt at an F1 nose looked very much like the Ferrari stepped nose does now.

Can't believe I'm saying it but Hispania. So much subtler than the others.
