lambert still got his head to it though and the keeper just came out of his goal and picked up. like i said no penalty, no advantage gained, game becomes much worse if silly decisions like that are continued to be made.

Agree with you on the over-protection of keepers but Davis was clearly fouled by the Cardiff player for their goal - referees need to be consistent, one way or the other.

Totally agree. IMO, if the keeper chooses to come for the ball he either makes it or he doesnt. If he is running into a crowd of bodies then its his own fault. However, if a player barges into the keeper in any way, not just the Forde/Davis incidents then it should be a fowl.

Funnily enough it doesn't matter whether you gain an advantage or not, hence why David Goodwillie scored a perfectly legitimate goal for Blackburn with his hand a few weeks ago, because it was accidental. Probably a good thing because I don't think he could score on purpose. Anyway, those penalties are all water under the bridge now, not much point arguing about them.

To be honest the worst decision of the lot went against our friends down the road v Ipswich. A long throw came in and was blatantly kicked into the net by an Ipswich defender. Ref said no one had touched it and ruled it out.

I agree that this is a game that we really should be winning, but it's not because I don't rate Watford or have any respect for them (I actually think it will be a tough game, and I really wouldn't be surprised if we didn't win). The reason why we really should be winning it is because we're chasing a top 2 position, and if we're going to ultimately be successful in achieving that, then there are only so many more points than we can afford to drop. Birmingham, Reading, Boro, Hull etc are queuing up to overtake us.

So failing to win away to the likes of Boro and Blackpool would be one thing (as I expect to be the case over the coming weeks), but once you're also failing to beat those further down the table too, then you can wave goodbye to top 2.

If we're realistic about finishing in the top 2, we should be winning almost every game against non top-8 opposition from now on in imo. It's nothing against the opposition (well, not in this case any way) and everything to do with the target which we're chasing after.

lets say the watford player jumps and doesn't hit his hand and lambert gets the header in. hes jumping with 2 watford players and trying to score 10 yards out with no other southampton player near with a cross that has no pace on it. he wouldn't of scored as the keeper would of had an easy catch or knock down would of come to nothing. there was no advantage gained. i don't understand your perspective.

Unfortunately i was not there, so could only go by the pictures. I will see if i can watch the highlights and get back to you.

Having watched it a couple of times, it would appear that John Eustace has prevented Lambert getting his head on the ball, therefore giving Watford the advantage as Lambert would have had a shot from the header.

This is the quote from the 11/12 edition of Laws of the game, which is the referees guidebook/bible!

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with
the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into
    consideration:
    • the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
    • the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
    • the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an
    infringement
    • touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.)
    counts as an infringement
    • hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an
    infringement

Im predicting a hard fought 2-1 win for saints here, but if we get an early goal, I can see us winning by a 3 or 4 goal margin. As much as saints have been crap away from home, we have also shown in a few games how good we can be, for example in the games at Forest and Ipswich, where we won 3-0 and 5-2. Hopefully both sides put in a repeat of last weeks matches and it ends up being a 4-0 win for saints, but I'm not getting my hopes up and wouldnt be surprised if we only got a draw out of this.

Dan, there's no way that was a Pen...but it makes no different...let's be honest, we were pretty bad back then..thankfully we've come a long way since Southampton away on 1 October!

<laugh> do we really need reminding about the blinkin' ghost goal? Nightmare decision! Shame Atwell won't be at the vic on Saturday now he's finally been demoted!

What was the reaction in the crowd? I think I would just have to laugh if it happened to us. I reckon young Stuart might mysteriously miss out on any games at Vicarage Road for a while.

PS I googled Akueyri. Nice runway. Bet the water's cold though.

The reaction in the crowd was a mixture of bewilderment, anger and outright abuse. Even the Reading players had their hands on heads and were laughing. No-one understood what had happened, we thought it was a goal kick (should have been a corner off Eustace) or maybe a foul on someone as the ref blew up and signaled our way. The whole thing was a farce.

The irritating thing about incidents like those is if it had happened to one of the top four in the Prem, we wouldn't have heard the last of it. Instead it is swept under the carpet as if it's not that important.
