I'm not saying it's essential to have a DM that just sits in front of the defence like Mascherano, Makelele and to a lesser extent Parker have done but it's definitely a role that has it's uses even in top sides. To me he doesn't have enough defensive qualities to take on any role that relies on him defensively, much like Diaby who then ended up on the wing, uprfont and anywhere else except for holding midfield.

I would probably play xavi iniesta and sweinsteigger in cm. None of them are really holding players but this team wouldnt need any holding player.

If I had to pick the best holding player in the world I would go for cambiasso every time.

im not wumming or anything im curious to know who is regarded as nothing but a defensive midfielder...Cambiasso is a good shout ..i dont regard the likes of Alonso as out and out defensive midfielders....Makalele was the last one of any note fpr me..Van Bommel is another.that anchor role is underestimated in peoples eyes if you ask me...and Parker has shored the Spurs defence up more notably than any other midfielder we have had in years..so he would be up there for me as unfashionable as he may sound.

Agreed. But I would say parker is like alonso. They help the team defensively but they arent an out an out sitting player really.

song has very little technique - he kicks the ball one way all the time, he doesn't point his toe down, his toe always comes up, I have NEVER seen him kick the ball with "check" or "fade" as some people call it. He gets the ball and dawdles with it, his speed of thought is slow, he shields the ball because he is stronger than other CMs, he does not have a great first touch at all, he is an ok dribbler.

Yes I have seen Song do some very good things, like that through ball to Cesc, but, like Walcott, I put it down to the law of averages, if he plays enough games inevitably he will do something outstanding.

Flip me, players at Hackney Marshes score the odd worldie, that doesn't make them good though.

Cannontotheright - I'd go pretty much with the list above - I edited it.

And I agree that Mikel is about the only DM worse than Song ... and Muamba.

Lucas has a better range/accuaracy of passing than Tiote, De Jong and Song. Particularly Tiote, who is poorer than the others in this regard.

Lucas has topped tackling charts for two seasons (last season and until his season ending injury this time around).

Parker is a better passer and has the capacity to be a bigger goal threat, but he seems content to sit deeper at Spurs (and is very good there).

Lucas would walk into the Arsenal team and would profoundly improve them.

Lucas ??? Oh hell no - he is utter pap, I'd prefer Song and most people know I don't rate him at all.

Lucas is stealing a living <ok>

Inler is no better than Song.

He's the defensive midfielder for two teams with awful defensive records (Napoli and Switzerland)

Levezzi and Cavani are the two players i would take from Napoli if I had the choice.

    1. Parker
    2. Lucas
    3. Toure
    4. De Jong
    5. Tiote

Song can be class but I reckon he needs a proper defensive minded player to sit beside him, he seems ok when next to Wilshere. I don't think Song really has enough desire or passion aswell.

Inler turned us down, memory loss??

We tried to buy him but he wanted to stay in italy.

For the record Song is an engima. Technique good, touch bad. Once he gets control of the ball he is quite good, but that can take him a while. Although defensively his tackling is not good enough.

Lucas is rated???, just because he showed he wasnt totally rubbish as his early career suggested, doesn't make him good.

    What a joke this is.

Parker is a much better DM than Song,. but his passing isn't better, he never plays a ball more than 10 yards.

Lucas to save Arsenal, of course you're a pool fan, you think Suarez is the best Striker in the World.

For his first season or two, I'd have agreed but he's improved no end since, have you seen him play over the past few seasons?
