ok so we know the history of safc or even north east players constantly being overlooked by england. take judas surely deserved more chances while with us, then skp how a golden boot player only got a few caps is a mystery, but out of all the players who have been through the safc door, who was the most overlooked player that never got capped or only a few times, i remember shaun elliot only ever got england b caps, and paul bracewell only got 3 (and that was while playing for everton), p.s all you mags feel free for your two pennies worth seeing as your already on here

Yes he was and genuinely regarded as one of the top ten in the world at the time, unfortunately for him, our number one at the time was Gordon Banks who was regarded as THE best in the world. Bit like Phillips, would probably have walked into most teams as first choice but England had Shearer at the same time so he never got a look in.

Some players are just unlucky in playing at the wrong time. (A bit like Joe Frazier - a great champion - who just came along in the time of the phenomenal Ali). Jackie Milburn would have had many more caps had it not been for Nat Lofthouse. Poor old Monty was snowed under with brilliant competitors - Banks, Clements, Shilton. And I always felt Dick Malone had exceptional positional sense - as Eddie Grey of Leeds found out! - and would have got a bagful of Scotland caps in any other period but when the brilliant Danny McGrain was in his pomp. But Kevin Phillips was a straightforward disgrace. I know he got a few caps, but he never got 90 minutes in any of them. 35 minutes here, 25 minutes there, is no way to let a new player settle in. And Len Shackleton was another. A one-off all-time genius who was overlooked time and again by a selection committee which Alf Ramsey promptly got rid of. (When the FA asked Ramsey to be England manager, he told them "I'll take the job if I can pick the team", and that was that). The one I felt most sorry for was Marco Gabbiadini. He came up through Bobby Robson's ranks, always one step behind Steve Bull of Wolves. When Bull moved up to England B, Marco got the Under-21 spot. When Bull moved into the full side, Marco was promoted to England B. But just as Bull was about to be dropped, Robson was sacked and Graham Taylor dismantled the structure. Marco never did get a cap. Gary Lineker always held the ball up very well, but I felt if he'd been teamed up with Marco, he wouldn't have needed to. With the pace of those two, I think England would have got a lot of breakaway goals. I guess I'm one of the few on here who'll agree with you about Darren Bent. I know he did what he did, but look at the lad's goal tally. Any player who can do that deserves his chance. The daftest of them all is Joey Barton. He's good enough if it wasn't for having an oversized self-destruct button. If he learned to act like an adult, he'd get a load of caps

monty was a fantastic keeper maybe he was a bit small and did not command his box enough but as others of his time there was not many better

Well the England manager didnt rate him in the top 5 English keepers for the World Cup squad so thats good enough for me

I had a quick look at the England squad for 98 and 2000 98 Sheringham Shearer Owen Ferdinand 00 Shearer Owen Fowler Heskey Apart from Heskey and he plays a different role as a striker I would would not replace any of them for Phillips
No doubt then as like last season slumderland were a one man scoring team All them players mentioned earlier no doubt have scored alot more goals in the premiership then Phillips And if premiership managers thought he was that good he would have played for better teams then Sunderland Southampton WBA and Birmingham
