"A couple of weeks ago, I was privileged to be one of a few guys representing Kerrydale Street in the Boardroom at Celtic Park, in the presence of Chairman Ian Bankier, while we handed over a cheque for £6200 to the family of a young girl, whom none of us ( with one exception) had ever met, simply for the reason that she is very ill and needs money to go to America to give her a chance to live. It was the kind of moment that epitomises what it means to me to be a Celtic supporter, and a Celtic man.

It was only as an aside that we took in the wonders of the Trophy Cabinet, the centrepiece of which is the replica of the Big Cup with the strips of both clubs from that famous day in Lisbon.

There is a sense of wonder about being a Celtic supporter, knowing what we achieved against all the odds. I am lucky enough to have lived through the greatest era in our history, when Europe's finest were regularly put to the sword by a group of young Scots, managed by the best manager in the history of the British game.

Today as the " greatest support in the world" gather on the south side of the city , to mourn the imminent passing of their " most successful club in football", it's worth remembering what they are and what they stand for.

As the Protestant triumphalism reverberates around the collapsing edifice this afternoon, and the great and the good of the other "Institutions" of this parochial wee country of ours get run over in the mad rush to proclaim their undying love and support for the dying embers of a Club that still, despite their proclamations, represent nothing more than the poisonous sectarian extremists who believe that they truly are "The People", let us stop and reflect on what they represent.

This term "Institution" has always bothered me. What exactly does that mean?

It seems that they align themselves with the staunch Protestant ethic that permeates much of Scottish life, from the Government, through the Banking System, to the Churches and the Fourth Estate. Subsequently , the happenings of the last week are not just about the demise of an openly sectarian football club who have been cheating the system since time immemorial, but about the threat to a way of life for Billy McBigot.
The preposterous uniform of Blazer , Club tie , flannels and Brogues is replicated in the Committee rooms of every Protestant organisation throughout the country. Transpose the Blue Room at Ibrox with the deep recesses of Killermont Golf Club, or Pollok Golf Club,or any one of a number of similair " institutions" be it golf, bowls or rugby, and you'll barely notice the difference. It's a uniform, a sign that they "belong".

Rangers exist to celebrate percieved supremacy. What other reason is there for proclaiming yourself "the most successful football club on planet earth"? Does anyone outside the west of Scotland actually believe that? Do the supporters of Real Madrid, Milan, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and countless others look at their global achievements and marvel at Rangers 54 tarnished League Titles , often achieved in what is becoming increasingly apparent has been a "one horse race"?

Today at Ibrox, as the 21st centuries equivalent of the Nuremberg Rally takes place in a small crumbling football stadium on the southside of Glasgow, the minions will turn up in their thousands to show the watching world that they really are "the people". I've no doubt we'll be serenaded with many of their bilious ditties to confirm their unique place in society and their hatred of those who don't conform to their ideals.

As Super Ally leads his team " marching towards a new light", we can sit back and witness the dead cat bounce of once dangerous and influential enemy who have become more of a laughing stock with every passing day.

    God speed their total demise."

Some of it is a bit rambling, but the basic premise is sound.

You do think you are ' the people.'

You do bang on about your 'integrity.'

Even WS was quoted as saying that there was an air of Protestant superiority about Ibrox.

    Totally correct Devlin.

The OP fails to see the irony in her thread title with regard to the puerile nonsense she then spouts in response to any poster that disagrees with her purely provocative cut and paste job.

Want me to explain to you what Rangers stood for?

Putting 11 Men on a field to kick a ball and occasionally making an arse of themselves. Now get a grip and get back to winding them up about REAL issues as opposed to sectarian fantasies you like to dream up and back-up with big words and a pretty story.
