Is anyone else a bit anxious about the signing of foreign players?

  1. I think it's quite shocking; all this talk about spending big on the signing foreign players, as i thought we would have learned our lesson by the fact that 90% of the foreign players we sign are ****e or take years to get up to the standard, regardless of how good they were in their previous leagues.

If it was a decision between Gameiro, Gervihno and Sturridge, i'd take Sturridge.

Young, proving he can score at this level at young age, can only get better, good ball control and skill, excellent strikers instinct. 4 goals in 5 for Bolton, and i think he could do better on our team, with better support behind him, and maybe even better next season.

If we can get a deal for Sturridge, why would we take the risk of yet another potential foreign flop? The only reason i was reasonably happy with the Ben Arfa signing, is that we only spent 5 million on him, and he showed potential in his couple of games. I'm still not 100% convinced it was the right decision really, but i'm still hopeful from what he has shown so far.

Gervihno, in my opinion, isn't worth risking a big portion of our transfer funds on. We may not have 35 million to spend. It's been reported that Villa had a 10 million quid bid turned down, and with all this interest, he might cost up to 20 million, and that would be a ridiculous fee.

I personally would just like to spend the money on a young promosing talent that has proven he will score goals in this league. That's what gets you points, not spending big on big names and thinking "yes they're expensive so that means they'll be good".

7/8 million for Sturridge and i'd snap Chelsea's hands off. 10-12 million would be a good deal.

I don't like the idea of Gervihno, you can disagree if you want, but i'd be dissappointed if we spent a ridiculous amount on a player that isn't even PL proven.

British players are seriously over priced the only was to gain home grown players is through Youth systems. The problem is the UEFA system of having more home grown players in squad will only make it worse.

  5. I don't mind if the price is right, but if we spend big that means we're depending on them enormously to be a success.

Yeh i agree with you in that respect. It's just cos premiership players are far too expensive and if anyone good is looking to leave then there'll be a lot of competition for them (I say that but it looks like we should get Ireland quite comfortably). We need to look away from the spotlight to find the real bargins, maybe not the big name players but i still believe that premiership players are more expensive for what they are

Thats why the players we are looking at are largely in France and Holland for example where the price of players and their wages arent too high.

Also Sturridge has had 5 good games, that is far from being "proven". Proven is a season or more of consistent scoring (in the case of a striker).

Oh for Gods sake Tash, what drivel, if a promising young player is proven in the Premiership then he is no longer promising is he as he will have proved his ability and the price tag will reflect that, as it is, the pool of players at this level is very small hence the need to look abroad for players, as for 90% of our foreign signings being rubbish, note no swear word, you are being far too dramatic.

Let me put it this way Tash:

    Danny Guthrie - 23, £3m
    Cheik Tiote - 24, £2.5

    Who'd you rather have?

    Besides:
    a) I don't see Chelsea selling him (especially if Drogba is on his way out)
    b) He is young and English which means you'll be looking at £20m pricetag

Also, I'm not being a dick, but judging by your statement on Ben Arfa (he has proven himself on a world stage for a couple of years now, not just the 2 games he played for us) you don't really watch many continental games?

The fact is, before Drogba came over here and established himself he was another of these 'Foreign Players', as was Berbatov, Hernandez, Tevez and Torres! Granted the Premier League is a tough league and requires a specific type of player to succeed, but that doesn't mean that Gervinho WON'T!

    No
Foreign players often have a better work ethic, alot cheaper, they have had better football coaching, taught to play on the floor football no hoof ball, less of a binge drinking culture and are on the whole technically superior to their English counterparts.
