what I love about these music threads that appear from time to time is the songs that make up someones life. As an avid music collecor / DJ since I was 11 - 33 years later I still find music that I am not familiar with with (and cheers for the levellers link as my knowledge of that particlar band is mininal. Whilst my own personal taste stretches from The Cure, Police, the Clash, REM, Marillion, as I have got older my taste grown wider, even more so as I work with bands and artists and singers over the years. two weeks ago I saw a progamme on Simon and Garfunkel and then went and bought all their early 1960's stuff. I love my indie but cannot stand gangsta rap, however, find a artist covering another artists songs interesting and love the latest Amy CD for her cover of a 1960's track.
Thanks to Kiwi for the Babysitters Circus - would never have found out about this band unless it was shared, and thanks to you all for the music links. This song in particular is quite poigant after a very IFy spell in my personal family life and the song sumed everything up that is good with life.
Will be retiring from my DJing at age 50 when either my back will have given up after lifting the heavy kit around or I get bored with the modern stuff but hope to have my new career embedded by then. I may even have a gig at he Olympic opening ceremony however, this is still being negiotiated at the moment but if comes off will share incase some of you are in Weymouth.
And if you were to do this post in a months time, my personal fav song may have changed as it always seems to do from time to time.

Really good thread and a good selection of choices and bands so far.

One of my all time favourites and a song that i can never get bored of is Ocean Colour Scene's "the day we caught the train"

I agree with all the comments regarding REM and the Levellers. Have been lucky enough to see both live. Was at Hyde park a few years back to see REM and watching Michael Stipe sit on top of the piano with Mike Mills performing night swimming was just stunning. I'll be supprised if there isn't a least one "reunion" tour in them in a few years.

Other great bands not seen mentioned are the Stone Roses and Pink Floyd, with some more modern ones being Bloc Party, The Editors and Maximo Park

Agree totally. But how about Cypress Hill or Warren G? I used to love their stuff back in the day.

Sku, I remember Regulate, quality song. The thing with gangsta rap is that the market is over flooded with crap, whereas anything decent such as Crypress Hill get forgotten. There was also the East / West USA bands thatbanterred each other until thigs took a turn for the worse with Tup Pac and Biggy smalls getting killed. Mabe I should amend my gangsta rap to state that I do appeciate decent tunes but cannot stand the rubbish.

Excellent thead <ok>

I can highly reccomend Isobel Campbell & mark lanegans album 'the Ballard of the broken seas' a couple of years old now but great alt-lo-fi country or the Felice Brothers classic 'whisky in my whisky'

As a teenager I was a big REM fan seeing them I think in '89 on the Green tour. Favourite album Fables of the Reconstruction has Maps & Legends on it, great track.

Lanegan is awesome. His work with the Screaming Trees ('Sweet Oblivion' in particular) and QOTSA is excellent.

Sorry guys, can't get that excited about REM. Give me the likes of King's X, XTC, The Kinks, Alter Bridge and Soundgarden anyday.

Sorry chaps, as a really long time REM fan (1988-onwards) and studier of all things Michael Stipe. Don't get your hopes up. There will NOT be a reunion, final gig, last concert, another record. They have gone.
If Cerny is our resident QPR ITK, I am the REM ITK. There will be no reunion and definiately not this Thursday.

My avatar gives away my idol and the one I grew up listening to through the eighties. But my music wary from the obscure to top of the pops, heavy metal to country even?!

Right now I listen to my brother in laws band (he's the bass player), good reviews when their debut album came out in october. Even sold more than Coldplay in Norway in their first week when both realeased their albums (incl CD's and iTunes) :)

The wife has just told me they are all in different bands

The Babysitters Circus are a New Zealand Electronica/Bass and Funk/Groove production team with a strong Singer Songwriter element that oozes with infectious fleshy hooks. It consists of Jason Kerrison (OPSHOP), maitreya, Tim Skedden (The Unsuitables) and newcomer Selwyn Leaf. T*B*C* started when throwing sounds and ideas together while babysitting for a friend, hence the name. The Babysitters Circus only have one rule: Any track presented has to be danceable or it doesn’t make the cut.

Speaking of Livorno. I once spent three nights, INCLUDING MY BIRTHDAY, in hospital there after hitting my head on the bottom of a swimming pool. It was actually pretty serious and I couldnt walk properly for a while and even had electric shock tests (think "One flew over the cuckoos nest...just less extreme) to check I was all working. Had to go back for further tests and injections and found out Id been put in a serious/critical ward. As I soon found out I was lucky I wasnt paralysed and somehow escaped with no permanant injuries. One of the less enjoyable holidays that.

Seems more relevant than something to get you pumped before a match...
